Can ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence programs help you win the lottery, or, at the very least, improve your odds?

With some recent lottery winners crediting AI for their big wins, there’s speculation that tools like ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity might be better suited to pick lottery numbers than the human mind or random number generators.

In September, a woman in Virginia who won $150K playing Powerball conceded that she used ChatGPT to pick her six numbers. Carrie Edwards’ $3 Powerball play, with the optional Power Play, matched four of the five white balls drawn and the red Powerball to snag the game’s third-best prize.

I’m like, ‘Hey, ChatGPT, talk to me. Do you have [lottery] numbers for me?'” Edwards revealed. Edwards opted to give the entire $150K windfall to charity.

Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot is a staggering $900 million. Should you let AI pick your numbers?

AI Picks Winning Numbers in Michigan

Edwards isn’t alone in using AI to win big. A woman in Michigan who won $100K during Powerball’s September 6 drawing revealed while collecting her prize that she too used ChatGPT to settle on her six numbers.

I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there, and the jackpot was over $1 billion, so I bought a ticket,” said the winner, Tammy Carvey. “I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers, and those are the numbers I played on my ticket.”

The rollout and availability of AI programs has lent to the lottery industry, where at least one opportunistic entrepreneur has developed software that claims to better one’s odds of winning. The Lottery Picker AI is a computer tool that analyzes historical results to produce number combinations supposedly more likely to hit.

With the Powerball and Mega Millions matrix being so vast now, the jackpot is extremely hard to hit. You need a good software program to crunch all those numbers down and try to give out the most probable numbers likely to be drawn using proprietary analysis of past drawn numbers,” the Lottery Picker website claims.

The software download starts at $209.99 for 90 days of use. A permanent download costs $309.99.

Mathematicians and AI say those who purchase and download the software are wasting their money.

Lottery Truly Random

While AI can certainly provide insights on future events, when it comes to the outcome of random lottery draws, its guess is as good as yours.

I wish I could, but no, I can’t predict Mega Millions or any other lottery numbers,” ChatGPT told Casino.org. “Lottery results are completely random, and there’s no pattern or algorithm that can reliably forecast future draws. Even professional statisticians can’t do better than random guessing.”

Pressed for tonight’s numbers anyway, ChatGPT produced 7, 14, 29, 43, 56, and 18 for the Mega Ball.

Asked if I should play tonight’s Mega Millions, ChatGPT answered, “If you enjoy the thrill of playing and can afford the ticket without it affecting your budget, then go ahead — just keep it modest. But if you’re relying on it for a financial solution, it’s better not to.”
