Nintendo Switch 2 sales pass 10 million mark as Mario Kart World beats MK8

Six months after its launch, the Switch 2 is still selling strong and even the Switch 1 is closing in on a new sales record.

Back in August, the Nintendo Switch 2 officially broke the record for the fastest-selling video game console of all time, at six million units sold in its first eight weeks.

After that kind of start, the next question was whether the Switch 2 could maintain that level of popularity, given the difficult worldwide financial situation and the mixed response to some of the games.

So far, though, it looks like Nintendo has nothing to worry about, as according to a new fiscal report from the company, despite a decline in sales (due to the time of year), the Switch 2 is still performing well and has crossed the 10 million sales mark.

The report covers the months of August to October for Nintendo’s 2026 fiscal year, with the Switch 2 pushing another 4.54 million sales in that timeframe.

This means the Switch 2 has sold a collective 10.36 million units in its first six months, which is far more than the roughly 4.7 million consoles the Switch 1 managed.

Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2’s success has driven up Nintendo’s profits across the board, when compared to the same period in 2024; a time when Switch 1 sales were dropping so sharply that Nintendo had to cut its sales forecasts.

This year, the exact opposite has happened. Initially, Nintendo was very conversative with its expectations for the Switch 2, targeting 15 million sales by the end of March 2026 – just slightly more than what the Switch 1 sold in its first nine months.

Now, though, Nintendo has bumped its target up to 19 million sales, as well as its operating profit (the amount of money it’ll make before taxes) by 15.6% to 370 billion yen (about £1.84 billion).

Nintendo does mention that these figures take into account the US’ tariff measures, ‘using the tariff rates in effect as of the end of September 2025.’ Said tariffs have been disruptive for Nintendo, prompting it to delay Switch 2 pre-orders in the US and increase the price of accessories – but not the console itself.

As for specific games sales, Nintendo only focused on its two biggest releases so far: Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. The former has now sold 9.57 million sales, which means an unheard of attach rate, of game to console, of almost 1:1.

The high value bundle with the game, which made it effectively half price, certainly helped but that total is already more than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold in its first year (9.22 million units). That game has gone on to sell 70 million copies and is the second best selling traditional video game of all time, behind GTA 5.

Donkey Kong Bananza, meanwhile, has sold 3.49 million units since its July launch, which Nintendo is also pleased with. There’s less to compare that with, given it’s been so long since there was a big budget Donkey Kong game, but Super Mario Odyssey, by the same team, sold 9.07 million in its first two months – although it launched just before Christmas.

Sales of Switch 1 hardware and software have continued to drop, as expected, although Nintendo still managed to push another 1.89 million consoles during the quarter.

This brings the Switch 1’s lifetime sales up to 154.01 million, bringing it tantalisingly close to the Nintendo DS’ record of 154.02 million sales. If the Switch 1 keeps up what little momentum it has, it will steal the DS’ spot as the second-best selling console of all time by the end of the year.

It’s uncertain whether it will beat the PlayStation 2 title of 160 million, but this year’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 are both cross-gen games. There’s also a couple of new Switch 1 games scheduled for next year, with Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream and Rhythm Paradise Groove.
