If you’ve ever fancied wielding a sword as a dinosaur, Dinoblade from an ex-Ghost of Yōtei developer is the best kind of fever dream.
With Final Fantasy 7 Remake and a new Half-Life out of the way, one of the most highly requested games amongst players of a certain age is a new Dino Crisis.
Capcom’s other survival horror series has been left dormant since 2003’s Dino Crisis 3, and despite the developer’s success with Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, it has still never been brought back in any shape or form. They even made a new dinosaur game, with Exoprimal, and purposefully didn’t do a crossover.
This slightly tenuous preamble is to tee up a dinosaur-themed alternative you might want to consider if you feel similarly starved, albeit one that’s more Devil May Cry than survival horror.
Dinoblade is an action role-player where you play as a Spinosaurus, aka the semiaquatic dinosaur that (‘Alan’ velociraptor aside) is the best part of Jurassic Park 3.
Crucially though, this Spinosaurus wields a sword in its mouth, in the same vein as Sif from Dark Souls, to slice up other dinosaurs, who all have their own weapons. It makes no sense, but with some thundering metal music, it’s suddenly a piece of art.
There’s no explanation as to why the dinosaurs have forgotten to rip and tears with their mouths, but the Steam description cites a ‘cataclysmic event’ that ‘redefined the very nature of dinosaurs’, which is probably all the explanation we need.

‘Venture across a sprawling world filled with awe-inspiring biomes, from dry canyons to dense, mist-shrouded jungles,’ the description reads. ‘Each region is ruled by a ferocious Alpha, an apex predator who guards the path forward. Defeat them, or be devoured.’
Dinoblade is the work of Jean Nguyen, a senior animator at Ghost of Yōtei developer Sucker Punch. The game has been brewing over the past few years, but a free demo has now been released on Steam, ahead of the game’s launch in 2026.
You can get a better look at the impressive combat animations in a trailer here, which even shows a Tyrannosaurus Rex twirling with pistols, Dante style, with his tiny little arms.
If it’s got you in the mood for a dinosaur game which is available now, Jurassic World Evolution 3 released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC last month and is easily the best Jurassic Park game out there.
