Police in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, are investigating a shooting that happened during a poker game at an apartment known for illegal gambling.
Targeted Shooting
Officers were called to the Reserve at Wauwatosa Apartments at 6100 W. State Street around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, November 12, after reports of gunfire.
According to the Wauwatosa Police Department, a suspect broke into a first-floor apartment through a patio, prompting the shooting. Several people were injured, but all have non-life-threatening wounds. One of the three reported injuries occurred while someone was fleeing the scene.
According to the authorities, all three injured individuals have since been discharged from the hospital.
Police say the apartment has a history of hosting illicit gambling, and at the time of the incident, a poker game was taking place with several people present. Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The department is asking anyone with information to reach out to the Investigative Division at (414) 471-8430.
In a public statement issued on November 17, police also highlighted the broader concern such incidents raise, reminding the public that illegal activities can compromise security and peace of mind.
“This incident is a difficult reminder of how illegal activities can undermine the safety and sense of security we all value in our community,” said Lt. Cory Wex.
Similar Incident in Wisconsin
At the end of October, a similar, but even more disturbing incident was reported in Wisconsin. Police sources said that two people were found dead after an all-night poker game at a home.
D.J. from Milwaukee is the suspect who called 911 and reported the incident while claiming he mistakenly shot the two.
The 35-year-old, who finished 11th in a World Series of Poker Circuit event five years ago, has been charged with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide.
His bond was set to $35,000 on October 27. He is scheduled to appear in front of a court in Milwaukee County for his preliminary hearing on October 31.
