Is Urban Meyer going to Penn State? The latest gossip from the hyperactive PSU rumor mill is that the three-time college football championship coach, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this year, is ready to ditch his Fox Sports headset for Nittany Lions headgear.

The Penn State Bank Button Society, a popular Facebook group that pays homage to local banks sponsoring Penn State football buttons for fans over the decades, regularly dishes on rumors surrounding PSU sports. The blog recently reported that Meyer, who coached Penn State rival Ohio State from 2012 through 2018, leading the Buckeyes to the 2014 national title, is interested in succeeding James Franklin.

As we were the first to report, US Sen. David McCormick and Urban Meyer were not discussing curtains for the new White House ballroom. Meyer told him he wants the Penn State job,” the society posted.

“Part of the package would include current Florida interim head coach and former Meyer player Billy Gonzales being named PSU WR coach and current Ohio State OC and former Meyer hire Brian Hartline being named assistant head coach (aka ‘coach in waiting’) and PSU OC,” the society continued.

The society added that the deal would include Meyers for five years on $75 million. Hartline would triple his $2 million salary to $6 million annually.

Bettors Not Buying Rumor

Prediction market Kalshi is taking action on who will become Penn State’s next head football coach. Bettors on the wagering exchange aren’t sold that the Penn State Bank Button Society’s intel is correct.

Meyer’s shares are trading at just three cents, significantly lower than front-runner Jeff Brohm at 29 cents. However, the Louisville Cardinals’ head coach’s stock has dropped considerably over the past 24 hours, down 11 cents.

Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz is next at 21 cents, up four cents over the past day, and Hartline is third at 18%. Hartline’s shares have tumbled 11 cents since yesterday.

Other contenders include Iowa State’s Matt Campbell (14 cents), Texas A&M’s Mike Elko (9 cents), and recently ousted LSU coach Brian Kelly (8 cents). About $200K has been wagered on the PSU coach event contract.

Most Penn Staters say Franklin’s firing must result in a headlining hire the likes of Meyer and company would unquestionably deliver. PSU Athletic Director Pat Kraft’s future presumably hinges on it, as Beaver Stadium is readying a $700 million renovation, and a rebuilding period for the football program likely won’t be tolerated.

Buyout Begone?

When Kraft fired Franklin, the decision came with a nearly $50 million buyout. But the contract terms require Franklin to at least consider employment elsewhere, which would reduce, or possibly eliminate, the buyout clause.

Franklin is reportedly nearing a deal to become the next head coach of Virginia Tech. Freeing up the $49 million buyout would presumably go a long way in Penn State being able to land a marquee name like Meyer.
