Star Wars Outlaws could be delayed until 2025 hints Ubisoft

It’s suspected that Ubisoft ’s Star Wars game has been pushed back but, for once, not because of development troubles.

Although it avoids naming it, Ubisoft has announced it has pushed back a ‘large’ mystery game, out of the company’s release schedule for the 2024 fiscal year.

Instead, the game will launch in the 2025 fiscal year, so anywhere from April 2024 to the end of March 2025. Given the lack of possibilities, it’s assumed that the game in question is Star Wars Outlaws .

As if to confirm it, the game is not mentioned at all in Ubisoft’s recent earnings report, even when discussing the remaining projects scheduled to launch before the end of the current fiscal year.

For context, this fiscal year ends in March 2024. While Star Wars Outlaws was only ever given a 2024 launch window, two sources told Kotaku back in May that Ubisoft wanted it out before the end of March.

At the time, they added that it could still slip into the 2025 fiscal year, which appears to be what happened. Although if they can get it out for Christmas 2024 it could do very well in that release window.

Ubisoft says that the main reason for the delay is because the company simply doesn’t need it out this fiscal year anymore.

‘The Company has decided to launch this other large game in FY2024-25, so as to maximise its value creation,’ is the official reasoning.

Ubisoft’s latest earnings report, which covers the first half of the 2024 fiscal year (April to September), states that it enjoyed a very strong second quarter, even going so far as to say it ‘overperformed.’

In other words, Star Wars Outlaws was being hurried along because Ubisoft needed a hit, but now there’s no urgency they’re giving it longer in the oven.

Ubisoft’s target earnings for that quarter were €350 million (about £305 million) and it wound up making €554.8 million (about £483 million); 36.6% more than what they were hoping for.

Ubisoft pins this success on the September launches of Assassin’s Creed Mirage and The Crew Motorfest , which is interesting since the latter didn’t seem to be doing all that well at all in the sales charts across the UK , Europe, and the US .

The publisher’s back catalogue also contributed to its quarterly earnings, particularly Rainbow Six Siege, older Assassin’s Creed games, and even The Crew 2 which saw ‘exceptional engagement with a record month in terms of MAUs (monthly active users).’

As for what Ubisoft does have scheduled for the rest of the fiscal year, it’s only other major launch is Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora in December, alongside no less than three mobile games: Rainbow Six Mobile, The Division Resurgence, and XDefiant.

In addition, the eternally delayed Skull And Bones now has a new launch window, with Ubisoft hoping to have it out within the first three months of 2024. Clearly, you shouldn’t hold your breath given how often Ubisoft has provided launch dates for the game only to push it back further every time.
