Michigan Gambling Revenue Tops $166 Million In September

Michigan’s commercial and tribal operators reported  $210.4 million in gross receipts  throughout September . The figure represents a 20% increase from Michigan’s August 2023 gaming revenue of $175.4 million.
Online casinos remain the primary sector of iGaming revenue for the Great Lake State. According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), the reported $210.4 million in September revenue came through:

Online casinos  gross receipts: $166.4 million (9.32% increase from August)
Gross sports betting receipts: $44.0 million (89.7% monthly rise)

While the online casino vertical shows a yearly increase of 29.3%, sports betting gross receipts drop 7.9%.
September was the second most successful month for Michigan online casinos
September was the second most successful revenue month for Michigan online casinos this year after March. To see the bigger picture, here’s how Michigan’s September online gambling numbers compare to the rest of the year:

September: $166.4 million (9.32% monthly increase)
August: $152.2 million (-0.91% monthly decrease)
July: $153.6 million (1.72% monthly increase)
June: $151.0 million (0.27% monthly increase)
May: $150.6 million (5.52% monthly drop)
April: $159.4 million (7.22% monthly decrease)
March: $171.8 million (15.92% monthly rise)
February: $148.2 million (3.58% monthly drop)
January: $153.7 million (0.6% monthly increase)

MGM Grand Detroit (BetMGM) remains the top performer in September with $48.6 million. Bay Mills (DraftKings) followed by $37.1 million, and Motor City (FanDuel) came next with $35.2 million.
Michigan online casino AGR rises, while sports betting dips yearly
Combined, online casinos and online sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR)  for September were  $168.5 million , including:

$149.8 million from iGaming (a 9.2% monthly increase)
$18.7 million from internet sports betting (a 17.8% increase from August)

Compared to September 2022 reported revenues, iGaming AGR was up by 29.3%, while sports betting was down by 31.1%.
According to the state regulators, Michigan’s 15 operators collected  $32.6 million in taxes and payments  in September, including:

$31.3 million in total online gaming
$1.3 million in online sports betting

The three  Detroit casinos  reported paying the city $7.97 million in betting taxes and municipal services fees during August, including:

$7.5 million in Internet gaming taxes and fees
$470,071 in online sports betting taxes and fees

Tribal operators paid $4.0 million to governing bodies.
Michigan sportsbooks make $457.7 million in bets, up 109% monthly
The September 2023 gaming report by Michigan regulators noted the total online sports betting handle of $457.7 million  (total bets). The number is up by $239.2 million (or 109%) from the $218.5 million handle recorded in August 2023.
The September figure also represents a 25.6% yearly rise  from September 2022. In fact, it was the first time this year that Michigan online sportsbooks showed an increase compared to the same time last year.
