Insomniac Games is still busy with its Wolverine project, but it’s not against the idea of giving Venom his own spin-off.

Anti-hero Venom has been a key part of the marketing for Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 ever since it was first announced, although they’ve kept his exact role in the game a closely guarded secret.

Between the success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and the popularity of the character, it would make perfect sense for the studio to release a Venom-centric spin-off, similar to the Miles Morales game that came after the first one.

From the sound of things, it seems like Insomniac is considering just such a thing, saying any such spin-off will be up to the fans… which pretty much guarantees it will happen.

Senior narrative director Jon Paquette doesn’t make any hard promises but when asked about a Venom spin-off by Insider , he says it’s something the team will discuss after they’ve had some R&R.

‘So, here’s what we’re doing. We’re focused on Spider-Man 2, and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react. We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves, ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’’ says Paquette.

‘We’ll kind of talk about stuff after we’ve all had time to sleep and take vacations.’

Venom’s comic book history means there is a lot of source material to draw from for his own game; something Paquette is well aware of, even namedropping the symbiote’s home planet of Klyntar and Knull, the eldritch god who created the symbiotes. Although he doesn’t confirm if any such details would be incorporated into a spin-off.

‘There’s such a rich universe there, and there’s a lot that the comics have done. We tried to take all that in, and then forget about it, and think about what would be best for our characters and our franchise,’ said Paquette.

Presumably, any Venom spin-off wouldn’t come out until after Insomniac’s next big project, the Wolverine game , which still lacks a firm launch date. Unless development takes so long that it puts out the Venom spin-off to keep fans occupied.

Spider-Man 2 is available for PlayStation 5.
