Call Of Duty on Xbox will not have exclusive content or early betas

Microsoft is dead set on keeping Call Of Duty on other platforms, but can the same be said for other Activision franchises?

Throughout the entire Microsoft/Activision Blizzard saga, the Xbox company has sworn that it has no intention of making Call Of Duty a platform exclusive, going as far to make deals with Sony , Nintendo, and all manner of streaming services to keep the franchise multiplatform.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer even vowed that the acquisition would end any sort of platform exclusive content ; something PlayStation Call Of Duty fans have enjoyed for many years.

This is a detail Spencer recently reiterated on the official Xbox podcast, explaining how, when it comes to content, there will be ‘100% parity across all platforms’ for future Call Of Duty games.

Spencer also talks about wanting PlayStation and Nintendo players to not feel like they’re missing out on anything; a sentiment he expressed the moment the acquisition was finalised .

‘For Call Of Duty players on PlayStation, and in the future, on Nintendo, I want you to feel 100% part of the community. I don’t want you to feel like there’s content you’re missing out, there’s skins you’re missing out, there’s timing that you’re missing out on, that’s not the goal. The goal is 100% parity across all platforms as much as we can for launch and content,’ says Spencer.

As such, Spencer rules out Microsoft pulling a Sony and introducing timed Xbox only beta sessions since, ‘I don’t think that helps the community, I don’t think that helps the game.’

That said, he can’t guarantee performance parity since ‘some platforms have resolution and frame rate differences just based on performance,’ which seems to be an acknowledgment that any Call Of Duty Switch games won’t run as well as their PlayStation/Xbox counterparts.

This was something Microsoft lowkey acknowledged earlier this year , when it said the goal for Call Of Duty Switch games was for them to be ‘an equal or better quality of other Switch games.’

Perhaps this will be less of a problem when the Switch 2 comes out since there’s chatter of it being significantly more powerful than the current model, boasting technology that enables visuals comparable to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S .

Spencer has given no hint that what he’s really talking about is the Switch 2, and yet by next autumn, when the next Call Of Duty arrives, there’s a good chance the Switch 2 will at least have been announced.

Despite his comments, it’s important to be sceptical about Spencer’s promises. After all, the multiplatform deal will only last 10 years and there’s no guarantee Microsoft will renew it afterwards.

Had it tried to make Call Of Duty exclusive from the get-go, it certainly would have made getting approval from regulators all but impossible, given the franchise’s worldwide popularity.

‘We have no goal of somehow using Call of Duty to get you to buy an Xbox console,’ said Spencer.

And yet despite his attempts to seem incredulous, that anyone could think that of Microsoft, it’s already a documented fact that he’s decided to make all future Bethesda games exclusives, and there’s so far been no clear comment on the future of other Activision Blizzard franchises, other than Call Of Duty.

Microsoft says it has plans for some Bethesda games to launch for PlayStation and Switch but has yet to name any and, according to evidence from the FTC court case, that’s not how his own executives understand the situation.

What makes all this seem so disingenuous is that, in theory, it’s perfectly understandable that after paying $69 billion for a company you’d want to make its content exclusive – that’s what happens with almost every other acquisition across the industry, including Bethesda.

Pretending to act surprised that anyone would even suggest otherwise is strange, especially when you consider that the plan is to eventually put Call Of Duty on Xbox Game Pass – which is clearly meant to attract new customers to the format.
