Assassin’s Creed Mirage – is this a hidden secret or abandoned concept? (Picture: Ubisoft)

Ubisoft seems to be planning a completely new backstory for Assassin’s Creed but there’s confusion as to why it’s not an official part of Mirage.

According to Ubisoft, last month’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage was their most successful current gen launch ever, which they must be pleased with considering it’s purposefully smaller in scope than Valhalla and harkens back to the series’ earlier non-role-playing entries.

It does feature references to the series’ long running modern day storyline, and the backstory of its progenitor race, but it seems the original intention was to shake things up far more than it currently does.

A fan has discovered a new post-credits scene, that completely recontextualises the series, but since it was never used officially it’s unclear whether Ubisoft still intends to follow on from its implications.

Since none of this actually happens in the game, the following is not technically a spoiler. Although either way we won’t be talking about the actual canon ending of Mirage.

The video is a post-credit scene and shows what seems to be a sci-fi style antenna in the desert of ninth century Persia.

Two voices can then be heard discussing the DNA memory technology, which links all the various Assassin’s Creed stories – all of which seems relatively normal for the series.

However, the voices then refer to the 21st century as ‘ancient history’ and call modern day Assassin leader William Miles one of the last mentors before the ‘Great Shift.’

None of this has ever been mentioned in an Assassin’s Creed game before, which always involve exploring past lives using technology in the present day.

There seems little chance that the scene is fake, with the filename’s suggesting that it was intended as a tease for Assassin’s Creed Neo, which is known to be an early codename for Assassin’s Creed Hexe .

Assassin’s Creed Red is believed to be the next game in the series, with Ubisoft confirming it’s set in Japan and rumours suggesting it’ll be out next year.

Whatever the Great Shift is it seems to be something of a meta reference to Assassin’s Creed Infinity , Ubisoft’s big plan to link all the upcoming games together more closely, by being its own independent platform or launcher (it’s still not clear exactly what it is).

Whether the storyline hinted at by this dialogue is still going to be part of it is a mystery, but it certainly gives a good idea of what the initial concept was.
