Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility may only be in most expensive model says rumour

Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility may only be in most expensive model says rumour
Fans have their own ideas about the Switch 2, like this fan-made design, but official info remains scarce (Picture: Nintendo)

Following the rumour of two distinct Switch 2 models, it’s now suggested one of them could launch without backwards compatibility.

Earlier this month, it was rumoured that the Nintendo Switch 2 (or whatever Nintendo’s next console is called) will follow the same trend as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and launch with two models : a traditional one that can play physical and digital games, and a cheaper digital-only model.

While such a detail has yet to be corroborated, it could line up with another Switch 2 rumour that was shared over the weekend; one that says Nintendo is considering launching a version of the Switch 2 that lacks backwards compatibility.

Ironically, this comes from the XboxEra podcast and one of its hosts, Nick ‘Shpeshal’ Baker, who is a frequent source of gaming related rumours, having accurately leaked the title of 2K’s Lego racing game and that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake would be revealed at a PlayStation event .

Nintendo’s radio silence on future hardware means backwards compatibility for the Switch 2 isn’t necessarily a guarantee, but it seems likely after the company’s talk of ensuring a smooth transition between consoles ‘ by leveraging Nintendo Accounts .’

The concept of an alternate console model with no backwards compatibility isn’t unusual, since Sony did precisely that with the PlayStation 3 – a comparison Baker directly makes.

Baker is quick to stress that this is apparently something Nintendo is currently only considering, so it may not go through with the idea. His fellow hosts posits the idea that if it does, then the model with backwards compatibility would be more expensive.

In a follow-up comment on Reddit , Baker adds that his source also couldn’t say whether the rumoured physical or digital model would be the one to launch without backwards compatibility. Although he assumes it’d be the former since it’s the one that would play physical games.

Backwards compatibility in general feels like a safe bet for the Switch 2. Not just because Nintendo consoles typically include it (the only reason the Switch can’t play Wii U games is because of the shift from discs to cartridges), but both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S feature backwards compatibility too.

It wouldn’t be a great look if the Switch 2 lacked a popular feature that both of its competitors offered, although following the crowd is not something you can ever bet on Nintendo doing – for better and worse.
