Don’t expect any Activision games, especially Call Of Duty , to pop up on Game Pass this year, even after the Microsoft buyout goes through.

It hasn’t finalised just yet, but it seems almost certain Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard will go through by the end of the month… for realsies this time.

Activision certainly thinks so, as it’s addressed a commonly asked question regarding its games and their potential addition to Xbox Game Pass.

While it rules out either Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Diablo 4 appearing on the Xbox service this year, Activision says you should expect some of its games to pop up on Game Pass sometime next year.

‘While we do not have plans to put Modern Warfare 3 or Diablo 4 into Game Pass this year, once the deal closes, we expect to start working with Xbox to bring our titles to more players around the world,’ reads a social media statement from Activision.

‘And we anticipate that we would begin adding games into Game Pass sometime in the course of next year.’

It’s awesome to see anticipation building for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® III. As we continue to work toward regulatory approval of the Microsoft deal, we’ve been getting some questions whether our upcoming and recently launched games will be available via Game Pass. This lines up with previous statements from Microsoft. Last year, the company admitted that Call Of Duty won’t be able to come to Game Pass for a certain number of years even after the acquisition goes through.

It’s unclear if this has anything to do with the arrangement Microsoft has made with Sony but, this past August, Xbox boss Phil Spencer explained that closing the deal doesn’t mean Activision games in general can immediately be added to Game Pass.

‘So, for the people who think the deal is going to close and then everything’s available, that’s not true. And it hasn’t been true in other acquisitions that we’ve done. There’s work for us to go do, just mechanical work for us to go do. So, it’ll take us time, definitely time to get the games in the portfolio,’ Spencer told IGN .

However, according to Windows Central , ‘We expect to see a ton of new games hit Xbox Game Pass the very minute the deal is finalised.’ That’s not the official line from either Microsoft or Activision Blizzard, but we’ll have to wait and see which proves more accurate.

There must be pressure behind the scenes to get Activision games on Game Pass ASAP. After all, the service isn’t performing as well as Microsoft wants it to and getting big name Activision IPs like Call Of Duty on there could breathe new life into Game Pass.

As a reminder, the service has missed its growth targets two years in a row and it’s been claimed that subscription numbers have stalled , for both it and PS Plus.

Spencer has even said that if Game Pass numbers don’t improve by 2030, Microsoft will have to quit gaming altogether , although no one really thinks that’s true and he was just performing for the court when he said that.
