PS5 shock news: September State Of Play was yet another nothingburger

PS5 shock news: September State Of Play was yet another nothingburger
We all knew this was coming (Picture: Capcom)

Although there was some good Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth news the latest State Of Play had almost no new game announcements.

Sony warned in advance that Thursday night’s State of Play PlayStation 5 preview showcase would focus on third party and indie titles and while that was true almost all of them turned out to be games that have already been announced.

The only thing that was completely new was indie game Baby Steps which… looked awful? It seemed to be a physics-based game in the style of Human: Fall Flat or QWOP but where the main character walks like a baby, for some reason, and doesn’t use their arms except for balance.

The only other sort-of-new announcement was the Separate Ways expansion for Resident Evil 4 . Although long expected, it’s never been confirmed until now but will be out on September 21 – alongside free Ada Wong and Wesker avatars for The Mercenaries mode.

Separate Ways was introduced in the PlayStation 2 version of the original Resident Evil 4 and has been a part of the experience ever since, as you play as anti-hero Ada Wong, instead of Leon.

Although it didn’t get an exact release date, the long awaited Resident Evil 4 VR Mode was confirmed as coming out this winter, and given Capcom’s excellent track record with VR should be well worth the wait – especially as it’s free.

Separate Ways almost certainly isn’t free, although there was no indication of how much it is.

The only other game where there was any significant new information was Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which closed out the showcase ( just as it did for the Summer Game Fest ).

The new trailer did look very good though, showcasing previously unseen party characters Cait Sith and Vincent Valentine, as well as iconic elements like chocobo racing.

Importantly, we also got confirmation of its release date, with the PlayStation 5 exclusive due out on February 29.

And that was it, really. Everything else looked good – the graphics for Spider-Man 2 are fantastic – but none of the new trailers or information revealed anything groundbreaking and you have to wonder, yet again, why Sony is not showcasing any of its own games beyond Spider-Man.

The State of Play didn’t even offer an update on the live service titles unveiled in May and certainly nothing new on the possibly cancelled The Last Of Us multiplayer spin-off.

For what it’s worth though Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora (basically Far Cry but in the Avatar universe) continued to look good, as did GhostRunner 2, which now has a release date of October 26.

Helldivers 2 continues to look like a third person Destiny, and is out on February 8, while FoamStars remains the most blatant clone we’ve seen in years – although if you want to try out Square Enix’s take on Splatoon an open beta starts on September 29.

The fact that this wasn’t the worst State of Play Sony has ever had says it all really, although we will say the new PlayStation 5 colours they announced, for the Deep Earth Collection , looked really nice.

They’re only covers and DualShock controllers though, not a complete set you can buy all in one, but Volcanic Red and Cobalt Blue will be available in November 3 and Sterling Silver on January 26.
