Sony shares the first real details on its Project Q handheld, now dubbed PlayStation Portal, but it still lacks an exact launch date.

Back in May, Sony unveiled its Project Q device , which it touted as something that would let youplay your PlayStation 5 games remotely, making it the closest thing there is to a PS Vita successor.

Aside from that, details wereslim, including its launch date and its price. Although Sony has now answered at least one of those questions.

Microsoft claimed it would cost roughly less than £240, but it turns out it’ll be even cheaper than that, coming in at £199.99 ($199.99 in the US ).

For those unfamiliar with PlayStation Portal, it’s essentially Sony’s take on the Nintendo Switch – a handheld gaming device that lets you continue playing your games away from the TV screen.

Unlike the Switch, though, it can’t play games natively and needs a permanent Wi-Fi connection to work. Sony makes no mention of using it while travelling and all of its examples are using it at home, close to where the PlayStation 5 is. (So, really, it’s more like the Wii U than the Switch.)

Not everyone’s sold on it looking like two halves of a DualSense controller, that have been awkwardly glued onto a screen, but said screen is confirmed to be an 8-inch LCD screen capable of 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.

Although, of course, that is dependent on the quality of the broadband, with Sony suggesting at least 5Mbps and ideally 15Mbps.

There’s no mention of any PlayStation 5 games being incompatible with PlayStation Portal either, except for PlayStation VR2 games and any games that ‘must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership.’

‘PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,’ reads the PlayStation Blog .

‘PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.’

Despite the lack of a launch window, Sony insists it’s on track for 2023 and promises to share details on how to pre-order it soon.

Sony also has news to share on the Pulse Elite wireless headset and Pulse Explore wireless earbuds; both of which will be compatible with PlayStation Portal.

Neither of them has a launch window, but the headset is confirmed to cost £129.99 ($149.99) while the earbuds cost £199.99 – same as PlayStation Portal.
