Baldur’s Gate 3 lacklustre final act explained by newly discovered cut content

Baldur’s Gate 3 lacklustre final act explained by newly discovered cut content
Baldur’s Gate 3 – Act 1 is undeniably amazing, but Baldur’s Gate 3 sadly peters out towards the end (Picture: Larian Studios)

Fans upset that Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 is considerably less refined that Act 1 now know why, as mountains of cut content is discovered.

For as successful and as widely beloved as Baldur’s Gate 3 is, it’s not without some oblivious flaws, especially as you reach its endgame.

Things like bugs and other technical errors will be ironed out over time , but what would be better is if the final act was elevated to the same level of quality as the incredibly impressive first one.

The contrast between the start and end may have multiple explanations, including the fact that Act 1 was in early access for nearly three years, but many fans have worried that Larian Studios rushed development of the ending in order to make its release date – and now there seems to be evidence for exactly that.

As it turns out, there’s a whole heap of cut content in the game, particularly from Act 3, which does suggest that Larian Studios could’ve used a few extra months of development.

There is a lot to pore over and given how much of it ties into the final act, we’re going to advise anyone who hasn’t beaten Baldur’s Gate 3 at least once to avoid reading any further. Although we’ll avoid the most extreme spoilers…

We’re also not going to analyse every single detail, but some examples include cut dialogue, cut scenes, and even an entire extra area for the upper city.

Also cut from the game is an exhaustion mechanic (something that’s still referenced in-game, with party members expressing exhaustion but nothing happening) and an item slot for belts that never made it in.

Some of the party members have had chunks of their story arcs removed as well. For example, an alternate resolution to Karlach’s storyline, despite being complete and fully voiced, wound up on the cutting room floor, since it was tied to the aforementioned upper city area.

There’s also nearly an hour’s worth of cut epilogue voiceover from the character Withers, which has been datamined and uploaded to YouTube .

You can find the lengthy breakdown over on Reddit, courtesy of user Vasgorath, but, again, be aware that there will be spoilers.

Naturally, there are hopes/expectations for at least some of this content to be added in the future, be it through patches or as part of a definitive edition.

Larian has done this before with its Divinity: Original Sin games, which received enhanced editions later down the line, which contained all-new content.

‘Really hope we get a definitive edition update restoring some of the cut quests and dialogue from Act 3, as while there’s still a lot of content, companion interactivity takes a nosedive and some of the plot points get messy,’ says Sporshie .

‘Larian and Baldur’s Gate 3 are still amazing, but it still feels a bit painful to see just how much didn’t make it. There were obviously active decisions made to cut some of this stuff, but a lot of it seems like it just came down to time,’ adds gmSancty .

‘The most painful part of all these cut content is how obvious they are,’ adds dougodu . ‘Most games have some form of cut content, no big deal. But when playing Baldur’s Gate 3 you can clearly feel something should be there but it is not, which is very jarring.’

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC. A PlayStation 5 version launches on September 6. An Xbox Series X/S version is also in development.
