Nintendo and Sony allegedly in talks with Qualcomm for new portable devices

Nintendo and Sony allegedly in talks with Qualcomm for new portable devices

Semiconductor company Qualcomm says it wants to help Sony and Nintendo make new handheld devices.

Even though Nintendo itself remains tight-lipped, it’s widely assumed that its Nintendo Switch successor is close to finally being announced.

A common theory is that it’ll launch sometime in 2024 and while that’s a detail Nintendo refuses to comment on, another company may have let slip that they have some sort of involvement with the new console.

Earlier this month, manufacturer Sharp admitted it will start making LCD screens for a new gaming console later this year, and now Qualcomm, which specialises in semiconductors, has said that it’s had conversations with Nintendo regarding future portable devices.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that it is involved with the Switch 2, but it is implied that Nintendo approached Qualcomm about it, meaning it could have at least lent some advice.

Qualcomm’s senior vice president Alex Katouzian suggests Sony has done the same, no doubt in reference to its Project Q cloud streaming device .

‘Those are companies [PlayStation and Nintendo] that are interested in having handheld gaming capabilities. So obviously they would reach out and talk to us,’ says Katouzian during a media roundtable event (as transcribed by Trusted Reviews ).

‘I think they, in general, will reach out to someone like Qualcomm because they know how big we are in Android gaming.’

Qualcomm has only recently entered the gaming scene by launching a dedicated gaming chip for the Android tablet Razer Edge. So, it certainly seems like the company is interested in branching out and offering its services to the larger console manufacturers.

‘A lot of console game companies want these handheld devices,’ continues Katouzian. ‘They’re not necessarily high-end graphics capable devices, but they want to keep all those mobile gamers in their own ecosystem. So in that sense, it makes sense for us to try and go after that.’

It has been rumoured that the Switch 2 will allow for 4K resolution , making it just as powerful as the PlayStation 4. If that’s the case and Qualcomm is involved with its production, then it will need to make a chip more powerful than the Razer Edge.

Supposedly, the Razer’s Edge chip – the Snapdragon G3x Gen1 – isn’t that much more powerful than the latest chips for smartphones, so it’s extremely unlikely that Nintendo would want the exact same one for the Switch 2. Especially if it intends for it to be more powerful than the company’s current hardware.

Fans have long hoped Sony might one day make its own portable console again, but while it’s possible that Qualcomm could’ve been talking about something other than Project Q that does seem unlikely.
