Developer CD Projekt has revealed that that The Witcher franchise as a whole has sold over 75 million copies so far.



Whereas most console owners had never even heard of The Witcher until the third game (for the very good reason that the only console edition up to that point was The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360) the third entry was an incredible success, with CD Projekt revealing that sales have now passed the 50 million mark.



That puts it above every Pokémon game and most other Nintendo titles, as well as every Call Of Duty and all Grand Theft Auto games apart from number five.



It’s only a few million off from Red Dead Redemption 2, although out of reach of the likes of Mario Kart 8 on 62.3 million and Grand Theft Auto 5 on a staggering 180 million.



It’s definitely in the top 10, at least according to Wikipedia , which is a staggering achievement for a series that is really only famous for one game (most of the other 25 million sales have come from subsequent spin-offs and mobile titles).



All this despite the fact that there hasn’t been a mainline entry in the franchise since 2015 and at one point CD Projekt were implying there wouldn’t be another one for a very long time, if at all.



That was before the disaster of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch and while that game’s reputation has now been restored CD Projekt pushed the panic button and greenlit a host of new Witcher games.



That includes a remake of the original , a spin-off (which may or may not have been cancelled ) and a whole trilogy of new mainline games .



Nothing has been seen of any of them yet but given how well the series has sold up to now it’s a good bet there’ll be hugely successful as well.



The next release from CD Projekt, though, will be the DLC expansion Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077, which is due sometime later this year.
