Zelda is the worst thing about Tears Of The Kingdom – Reader’s Feature

A reader is upset at Zelda ’s role in Tears Of The Kingdom and calls for her to be playable and get her own spin-off in the future.

Back in 2019, I wrote a Reader’s feature entitled Zelda is the worst thing about The Legend Of Zelda . I stand by that statement. I was upset that through the long and storied history, of what is undoubtedly the greatest video game franchise ever made, the character it is named after has been an entirely incidental damsel in distress. She has no consistent personality, she very rarely has any direct influence on the plot, and you never get to play as her.

The highlights for Zelda’s career include a much cooler alter ego in Ocarina Of Time and technically being playable in Spirit Tracks… except she’s a ghost that’s scared of mice. You know, because she’s a girl. You sort of half played as her in the end battle of Twilight Princess and she had another cool alter ego in The Wind Waker, but basically she’s a non-entity. A simple trope that exists only to be rescued or dump exposition.

Her portrayal in Breath Of The Wild was certainly no improvement, as not only did she not do anything but she spent most of the game whining and wallowing in self-doubt. Also, her voice actress is awful and makes an already weak character seem like even more of a stereotypical wuss. It’s a frankly offence stereotype, especially when it’s her name on the logo, not Link’s.

I mean, what is the legend of Zelda? An ineffectual loser that is treated as little more than a prize for Link to achieve. She never does anything, except maybe be involved in some sort of vague magic shenanigans right at the end of the game.

I had hoped that Tears Of The Kingdom would be different, although I have to say I never had much confidence that it would be. I’m not sure why people got the idea that she would be playable in this one. I assume it was just that she was in a lot of the trailers walking alongside Link, but of course she wasn’t playable, just like she wasn’t in any of the other games.

Unfortunately, I can’t get into spoilers here, to say what her role is, but suffice to say she spends most of the game in flashback (which I think you can probably skip and not see if you don’t want to do that particularly quest) and not helping Link or doing anything of any practical use to his adventure.

Then her big role in the plot is so eye-rollingly demeaning it almost feels like Nintendo is trolling those that want to see Zelda done better.

She’s just an awful character and I’m losing faith that she’ll ever get any better. Nintendo obviously reacted to some of the complaints against Breath Of The Wild in Tears Of The Kingdom, with things like the Fuse ability for weapons and recipe cards, but they’ve never given any indication that they’re listening to the demands for a more proactive and playable Zelda.

I assume the next Zelda will be on the Switch 2, and so probably a clear break from the last two games, in a new era. I can only hope that will see Zelda be revamped as a character with real agency and if she’s not made playable at least give her a spin-off or something where she is.

In Smash Bros. she has all these magic powers but when has she ever used them in a game? Is Zelda a fighter or is she just a figurehead and a mascot? If it is the latter, then Nintendo should change it immediately.

Historically, Princess Peach has had many of the same problems, but more recent games have leaned into the absurdity of her situation and made her a funny character that actually adds to the games (I also thought she was handled well in the Super Mario Bros. Movie). Princess Zelda has never been that lucky and the worst thing is Nintendo don’t even seem to be trying to do better.
