Thanks to fan confusion, Konami has tried to explain why its upcoming remake is called Metal Gear Solid Delta – but it hasn’t really helped.



Nobody was too surprised to see a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater be announced at last night’s PlayStation showcase, since it was widely rumoured to be making an appearance.



Still, Konami had some neat surprises to share, including the return of the original voice cast and a remastered collection of the original trilogy, but one headscratching detail was the remake’s name: Metal Gear Solid Delta.



We’re clearly not the only ones puzzled by the arbitrary name change, as Konami has issued an explanation for why it traded the numerical three for the fourth letter in the Greek alphabet.



As the third game in the series but the first chronologically, you’d think Konami would gone with something like Metal Gear Solid Alpha or Gamma, but it opted for Delta because of what else the letter represents.



‘The Delta symbol (Δ) was chosen because its meaning fits the concept of the remake project,’ it explains via the official Metal Gear Solid Twitter account. ‘Delta means ‘change’ or ‘difference’ without changing structure.’

That’s all a bit of a stretch though and by far the most common use of the word delta in English is to denote the fourth item in a sequence.



R-Type Delta, for example, uses it in just such as way, so it’s a bit weird to have it being used for the third entry in a series.









Several fans admit they saw it as just a triangle, thinking the three sides were meant to represent the numerical three in the title, or even the triangle symbol on the PlayStation controller – since the original game was once a PlayStation 2 exclusive.



Not wanting to confuse newcomers by starting with a remake with the number ‘3’ in the title is understandable but the choice of Delta is borderline nonsensical.

That said, Konami’s logic does provide a bit of insight into how it’s approaching this remake. It’s already been described as a ‘faithful recreation of the original story and game design, while evolving the gameplay with stunning visuals and a seamless user experience,’ but the Delta symbol could mean fans should expect a few differences or updates to the original narrative.



It has us thinking of the Resident Evil 4 remake , which likewise was a very faithful recreation that expanded on certain elements without radically altering the source material. That remake worked out very well and also proved a hit with fans, a fact that Konami is unlikely to have missed.



Konami has also since confirmed that while the remake is being handled in-house, Singaporean studio Virtuos is assisting with its development.



There were long running rumours that Virtuos had been contracted by Konami to work on a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, so anyone who still believed in those rumours is feeling mighty vindicated right now.



This is the opposite approach Konami is taking with the Silent Hill 2 remake . That project is being led by a third party studio, Bloober Team, with Konami overseeing development and publishing it.
