Dragon’s Dogma 2 brings back Pawns but still lacks co-op

Dragon’s Dogma 2 brings back Pawns but still lacks co-op

There’s no sign of co-op for Dragon’s Dogma 2, but fans are still crossing their fingers for its inclusion.

Fans have been holding out for a sequel for over a decade, but last year Capcom announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 was in active development and finally their dreams were answered.

After initially only teasing a logo, Capcom shared a proper trailer during last night’s PlayStation showcase , highlighting a mix of cinematics and gameplay.

All in all, it looks very much like what you’d expect from a sequel, confirming the return of the first game’s computer-controlled companions, the Pawns. Sadly, despite it being at the top of many fan’s wishlist, it seems Dragon’s Dogma 2 won’t feature co-op.

Pawns were a key feature of the first Dragon’s Dogma . You had one main Pawn that you could fully customise, as well as slots for two extra Pawns. While you could recruit pre-built Pawns within the game, you could also obtain Pawns made by other players through an online lobby.

Pawns would aid you in battle, not just by fighting enemies but by also yelling out hints and strategies.

From the sound of it, the Pawns are largely unchanged for the sequel. You have access to three, only one of which can be customised, and they’ll be controlled by the computer.

Some form of co-op play, local or online, is something fans have wanted since before the sequel was even formally announced, yet Capcom’s website makes no mention of such a feature.

It’s not explicitly denied co-op, but if it is in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you’d think Capcom would make that clear from the get-go rather than save it for a later announcement.

The game’s website also describes it as a ‘single-player, narrative driven action-roleplaying game that challenges players to choose their own experience,’ lending further credence to the idea that co-op isn’t a thing.

That hasn’t stopped fans from hoping though, with many taking to social media to express excitement for the sequel and let Capcom know how much they want co-op.

Really hope Dragon’s Dogma 2 includes CO-OP mode @tomqe — Starrion (@GamerIdentity1) May 25, 2023

My hope for Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that it has co-op, but when you join someone’s game you have to play as your pawn. — 🍰KashiKakes🍰 (Vtuber duder) (@KashiKakes) May 25, 2023

One think I really wish about: co-op in Dragon’s Dogma 2. — Indariil (@indariil) May 25, 2023

Also Dragon’s Dogma 2 is neat. Kiiinda hoping it actually gets co-op this time. The first game was great and all, but I always felt like I would’ve been having *more* fun with three buddies all climbing over monsters with me

Capcom has also provided some insight into the game’s story, although it otherwise sounds just like the first game. You are the Arisen and it’s your destiny to slay the Dragon, a being which symbolises the end of the world, after it takes your heart.

It seems like Capcom is playing things extremely safe with the sequel, although the trailer has confirmed new fantasy monsters to slay and a new race of beast people.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will launch for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
