Metal Gear Solid 3 remake: everything you need to know from the leaks and rumours

Metal Gear Solid 3 remake: everything you need to know from the leaks and rumours
Ever since this screenshot from a pachinko machine made its way online, people have dreamed of a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake (pic: Konami)

Konami’s worst kept secret should finally be revealed tonight, but how much do fans really know about it and the company’s plans?

We imagine you’re all sick of the near constant Metal Gear Solid rumours this month. With any luck, though, they will finally come to an end after tonight’s big PlayStation Showcase .

There have been claims of a Metal Gear Solid revival for the last couple of years, with Konami allegedly kicking it off with a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater , aka the first chronological entry in the series and, debatably, the best one.

After some suspicions it would ape the Silent Hill 2 remake, and launch as a PlayStation 5 timed exclusive, a more recent report stated that it will arrive on Xbox and PC too. Something another insider has now corroborated.

What are the Metal Gear Solid remake rumours?

The latest information comes from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who initially said he had heard of some kind of exclusivity agreement between Konami and Sony but wasn’t 100% sure.

Following a report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson (an often reliable source of information), Corden can ‘hard confirm’ that the remake will be a multiplatform launch.

That said, it still sounds like Sony will be the one to debut it at tonight’s showcase, which could mean Sony has a marketing deal with Konami, similar to Hogwarts Legacy .

That game is multiplatform too, but Sony struck a deal to have it more heavily promoted for PlayStation, as well as getting exclusive content and a dedicated PlayStation showcase.

Coincidentally, that game’s composer may be working on the music for the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. Earlier in May (which makes it the fourth leak this month), J. Scott Rakozy uploaded an Instagram post which featured something that sounded a lot like the Metal Gear Solid theme tune, only to then take it down as if they’d revealed something they shouldn’t have.

Metal Gear Solid 3 – remember when they ported this to the 3DS in 2012?

Is Metal Gear Solid 3 remake real?

At this point, it’s safe to say that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake does exist, but unless there’s another last minute leak, any further specifics won’t be known until after its announcement.

Neither Henderson nor Corden could say what sort of remake it’ll be (a 1:1 recreation or an altered retelling like Resident Evil 4 ) or who the development team is.

One popular rumour from 2021 suggests that Singaporean studio Virtuos (which usually handles HD remasters and ports) has been tasked with the remake, with its YouTube channel uploading and then deleting a short video of a jungle environment last year.

Many leapt to the assumption it was a teaser for Metal Gear Solid 3 given its jungle setting, but others discovered that it came from a free Unreal Engine 5 assets pack. Either way, there was never a concrete explanation for the random video upload.

Is Hideo Kojima making Metal Gear Solid 3 remake?

Regardless of who’s making it, you can probably rule out Hideo Kojima, the original creator and director of the Metal Gear Solid games, being involved. His public departure from Konami wasn’t exactly pretty, with him effectively being ousted from the company.

Combined with the cancellation of his Silent Hill project and alleged poor treatment of its employees , Konami’s reputation took a dire hit, one which it hasn’t fully recovered from.

The legacy of Metal Gear Solid 3, though, means a remake will likely turn a profit on its name alone (unless Konami flubs it really badly) though whether the rest of the series will see the same treatment remains unclear.

Remakes of the first two Metal Gear Solid games seem like safe bets but there have been suggestions of them being remastered for modern platforms instead.

The real question is what will come after that. A remake/remaster of Metal Gear Solid 4? Metal Gear Solid 6? Metal Gear Rising 2? Ports of the Metal Gear Acid games? Okay, maybe not that last one.

Is Castlevania getting a new game?

With both Silent Hill and Metal Gear coming back, that just leaves Castlevania to follow suit. Like its Konami brethren, it too has been frequently rumoured to getting a revival but there are no solid rumours beyond that.

Konami clearly still has an interest in the franchise, as evidenced by modern ports , the Dead Cells crossover , and the Netflix series. However, there’s currently no suggestions of a new entry being in the works or of anything being announced at any of the upcoming showcases.
