Spider-Man 2 – you can’t bring a friend (pic: Sony)



Developer Insomniac has answered one of the most important questions about Marvel’s Spider-Man and confirmed it’s single-player only.



Although we know next to nothing about PlayStation 5 exclusive sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 , hopefully that will change on Wednesday with the advent of the PlayStation Showcase .



In anticipation of that preview event, developer Insomniac has decided to get one thing out of the way ahead of time: Spider-Man 2 does not have any co-op features and is single-player only.



Many fans theorised that it had some sort of two-player option, since the one and only trailer focuses on Peter Parker and Miles Morales fighting together in what many felt was meant to imply co-op gameplay – but while the final game will presumably contain some element of that you’ll only be playing alongside the AI.



To underline what we said yesterday, about Alan Wake 2 and voice actors being a very unreliable source of information, the rumours of a co-op mode were last year boosted by comments from Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter, when he said ‘I think so’ in regard to whether the game had co-op.



It’s taken a while, but Insomniac has finally denied all the chatter, answering a fan’s question on Twitter by saying: ‘Nope! It is an epic single-player adventure!’

It would have been ideal to hear that from an actual developer, and not whatever rando is in charge of Insomniac’s Twitter account, but since nothing has been redacted in the hours since the comment was made there now seem little chance it’s not accurate.



The implication now, is that you’ll play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales but it’s not clear how often the character you’re not currently playing as will be around, and if the sort of team-up action seen in the announcement trailer is commonplace or not.



The truth is we still know very little about the game in general and it’s only because of Venom voice actor Tony Todd that we know (or think we know) that the game is coming out in September, as officially it’s just autumn 2023.



The PlayStation Showcase is on Wednesday, May 24 at 9pm BST and Spider-Man 2 will almost certainly be one of the major focuses, since it’s the only exclusive we know for certain will be out this year.
