PS4 Pro – a PS5 equivalent is beginning to look inevitable (pic: Sony)



Sony has already hinted at it but the owners of Rockstar Games also seem to think that a mid-generation upgrade for the PS5 will happen.



Nobody knows exactly what Sony is going to unveil at its PlayStation Showcase next week but there is a reasonable chance it will involve new PlayStation hardware ; perhaps the rumoured Q Lite handheld device or even the PS5 Pro.



It’s still unclear whether the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were one-offs or the start of a new mid-generation tradition, but rumours already suggest the latter, with Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two also being of that opinion.



Since this is around the time when the consoles were introduced last generation, the question was put to Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick and he said that ‘we probably will’ see console updates from both Sony and Microsoft.



Zelnick wasn’t particularly interested in the issue, because according to him the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X didn’t affect Take-Two’s business one way or the other, and it’s unclear whether he had any insider knowledge he was drawing on.



Considering his importance in the industry, and that this wouldn’t be the first time he let slip someone else’s secret , he probably was.



Although Microsoft has never broached the subject (and it’s unclear what their device would be called, since Xbox Series Y doesn’t sound very good when you say it out loud) Sony has hinted at a PS5 Pro before, implying that it’s relatively imminent.



The most recent, believable, rumour suggests that the PS5 Pro will be out in time for Christmas 2024 but a 2023 launch has also been discussed, which is why there’s an outside chance it could be revealed next week.



Take-Two was talking about the PS5 Pro, and seemingly hinting at GTA 6 , as part of their end of financial year report, which wasn’t actually that great.



Their sales were up but their profits were down, with a $1.12 billion (£0.90 billion) loss. That’s for the fairly obvious reason that they haven’t had many new games out recently, with the annual NBA 2K series and Grand Theft Auto 5 having to cover for the lack of new titles.



Sales for Grand Theft Auto 5 are not up to a staggering 180 million units, with Red Dead Redemption 2 up to 53 million and NBA 2K23 breaking a series record by hitting 11 million sales to date.



That’s one of the reasons Take-Two hinted at GTA 6 and other major releases in their next financial year, although they were purposefully vague about the whole situation.



Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was also asked about the Switch 2 but avoided the subject and instead confirmed that the publisher would continue to support the current Switch, despite recently cancelling the Switch version of Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
