Spider-Man 2 – we should know more next week (pic: Sony)

The Thursday letters page is enjoying a very good month for new video games , as one reader is sent mad by Jurassic World’s plot.

Breaking the silence So Sony has finally brought the hype and not only announced an E3 style showcase but said that it will be a big deal, with lots of new games. I’m excited. So let me ask the obvious question: what will be there? GC covered the obvious ones, where Spider-Man 2 and The Last Of Us multiplayer pretty much have to be there. Wolverine and Horizon multiplayer? I’d put that at 50/50 but I am convinced of the Metal Gear Solid 3 rumours, so I’ll predict that.

Beyond that, it’s less guesses at specific games and more what are the studios doing? Santa Monica (God Of War) hasn’t announced new anything, Sucker Punch hasn’t confirmed Ghost Of Tsushima 2, and we have no idea what Bend (Days Gone), Bluepoint (Shadow Of The Colossus), Housemarque (Returnal), or Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) are doing next.

There’s a bunch of other smaller studios too and I will be very upset, and moderately surprised, if we don’t get a new Astro Bot. Also, hopefully something to explain why nothing has been said about Bloodborne in years.

I know it’s best to expect nothing with these sort of events but I’m really hoping this is going to be one for the ages. Make it a good one and Sony’s years of silence will be forgiven! Orbst

In with the new The most exciting thing to me in Sony’s announcement of an announcement was the emphasis it put on new IP. I hope this turns out to be more than one and shows that they’re not just reliant on sequels and nostalgia. In particular I hope Naughty Dog are not work on The Last Of Us Part 3 and I wish that Sucker Punch were not doing Ghost Of Tsushima 2, although I bet they are.

One of the new IPs should be whatever Bluepoint are doing next, which I am interested in as they would’ve been wasted on just another remake. Similarly, I’d much rather Housemarque do a new game than a sequel to Returnal. I loved that game but why be bound to the past when you could make something new and exciting? Kaliban

Wish I was there Yay. PlayStation have finally announced a showcase. It’s about damn goddamn time. Because god knows, the recent State of Plays have been a right state… of disappointment. Only downside is that during the time it’s broadcast I’ll be unable to enjoy it because I’ll be actually boarding a plane to Bali.

What I’m hoping to see is a trailer for Spider-Man 2 and Silent Hill 2 information, perhaps a gameplay trailer or pre-orders announced. A first look at Alan Wake 2 and it’ll definitely not happen, a first look teaser, or announcement of Resident Evil 9. We did see Village, showcased at a previous event, after all. So never say never.

I’m hoping it lives up to our expectations and that we finally see some competition, because Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom might just be in the frontline to win Game of the Year. Your move PlayStation. Shahzaib Sadiq

GC: Might?

Happy days Almost three years down the line and the current free to play with subscriptions, PC only form of TrackMania dropped on consoles the other day, which was a nice surprise. I know it had been announced a while ago for console, but I don’t believe a date was ever announced. The subscriptions are a yearly standard pack for £7.99, a yearly club pack for £24.99, and a three year club for £50. The free-to-play model caused a bit of stink when first announced but the game is very well regarded and very popular now.

Just to add to the good month of games PlayStation/PC puzzler Humanity is reviewing very well and I just looked at this month’s Edge magazine scores and they gave Xbox/PC anticipated indie game Planet Of Lana 9/10. Both games are available day one on their respective systems subscription services too. Good times. Simundo

GC: We have Planet Of Lana in for review at the moment.

Secret exclusives I noticed on the Xbox store the Dead Rising games are discounted. Dead Rising 3 in particular, which is the first time I’ve ever seen it discounted. It has me suspicious, could we see a Dead Rising sequel/reboot at Microsoft’s show next month? I reckon we might, along with a new Splinter Cell, which makes sense because it started out as an Xbox exclusive also.

The big question is whether the Indiana Jones game is an Xbox exclusive? I hope it isn’t. Since Indiana Jones has inspired game series like Tomb Raider and Uncharted, it would be a shame not to see it experienced by more players. It is being made by a Bethesda studio, so who knows? I rate MachineGames, I’ve high hopes for that game. Anon

GC: There are already rumours of a new Dead Rising . There’s also supposed to be a Splinter Cell remake on the way, but almost nothing of it has ever been shown.

WARNING Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom spoilers WARNING Having being coerced into watching Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and sat in disbelief as I witnessed a Sotheby’s dinosaur auction being performed under a mansion, without the knowledge of a man sat upstairs who genetically cloned his deceased daughter, then raised her as his granddaughter without thinking it grotesque.

The granddaughter who in her innocence, decides that the most moral and humane thing to do is to release all the crazed, panic-stricken dinosaurs into the wild so they can slaughter thousands of humans (this done simply by just laughably pressing a singular red button) which thus leads her to utter possibly the most nonsensical line written by a human hand.

It leads me to ask GC the question. Is there a story in a serious AAA video game that’s as mind numbingly stupid as the one in Fallen Kingdom? Apologies for the rant. It’s just that this nonsense made over a $1 billion. Wonk

GC: You forgot the fact that they were selling cloned dinosaurs for just $10 million. There are real skeletons that have sold for more than three times that. Also, almost all video game plots still end up being stupider than that.

That only counts as one No wonder Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom is the best-selling game of the year, I have bought the game three times now. The first time was a pre-order from the Nintendo site. Nintendo missed off my full address and so Royal Mail returned to sender. The second time was from Amazon, they said it was left in the letterbox. It certainly wasn’t my letterbox that it was left in.

Finally managed to nab a copy from Smyths after passing by on a different errand. I have asked for a refund from Amazon and Nintendo, do they deduct refund numbers from the sales total?

Also been playing Resident Evil 2. I was really enjoying it but now it’s turned into the Benny Hill simulator, with Leon being chased by Mr X. This gameplay mechanic is really putting me off the game. Alek Kazam

Déjà vu I’m playing through Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom right now and I’m enjoying it but… I’m kind of embarrassed to say this but am I the only one that’s finding it really difficult? Maybe I’ve wandered into an area that I shouldn’t of but I’m having a lot of trouble with enemies, given I’ve got so few hearts, and I’ve now taken to just trying to avoid them and creep around their camps.

Damn copy and paste, let me try that again…

I’m playing through Zelda: Breath Of The Wild right now and I’m enjoying it but… I’m kind of embarrassed to say this but am I the only one that’s finding it really difficult? Maybe I’ve wandered into an area that I shouldn’t of but I’m having a lot of trouble with enemies, given I’ve got so few hearts, and I’ve now taken to just trying to avoid them and creep around their camps.

There we go… that’s better.

On Tuesday night I was planning to write to GC about my difficulties with the previous Zelda game, then Wednesday morning I read the letter I never got chance to write, stolen by a Mr Spookan.

In all seriousness , I’m finding Breath Of The Wild really hard, almost like dark souls hard. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. I’ve no idea where to go (I’ve just got the glider and jumped off the cliff). I would ask if it gets easier but I’ve already seen someone on YouTube with about 30 hearts so I’m guessing it does.

Maybe it’s just my age, big birthday in a couple of weeks

Manic miner 100 (gamertag) PS: Keep up the excellent work, GC.

Inbox also-rans If all this Activision Blizzard nonsense ends up with Call Of Duty not being available in the UK there will be rioting in the street. What a bizarre mess all this has been. Pendle

So the only reason they made Overwatch 2 is no longer going to be in Overwatch 2? I’m beginning to think maybe Activision Blizzard aren’t worth $69 billion after all. Liegerlon

This week’s Hot Topic The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Damon, who asks what’s the longest you’ve ever spent looking forward to a game?

Although it’s becoming common for new games not to be announced until close to release even then they can often get delayed, leaving you waiting months and even years after their initial reveal. So which game have you waited the longest for and was it a disappointment – if it’s actually out yet.

What do you feel is the optimum time to announce a game, ahead of its released date and how upset do you get about delays, versus launching with bugs and other problems?
