Call Of Duty blocked in the UK? Microsoft doesn’t rule it out

The CMA faces pressure to reapprove the Microsoft Activision deal as it’s theorised that the UK could lose access to Call Of Duty .

The never-ending saga that is the Microsoft Activision Blizzard merger took another pivotal turn this week, with the European Commission approving the deal .

To keep things simple, this has led to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) decision to block the deal coming under renewed scrutiny. Although it stands by it, the regulator now faces heat not just from Microsoft but MPs who are fearful about the country looking unappealing to big businesses.

Now, a comment by Microsoft’s own CEO Satya Nadella has people worrying that if the CMA doesn’t reverse its decision, then Microsoft simply won’t sell Activision games in the UK.

Nadella hasn’t spelled things out quite that bluntly, but when the possibility was put forward to him in a recent interview, he didn’t rule it out either.

‘Could you ever see an age where you would sell the products in the US if it was approved, sell the products in Europe, and not sell it in the UK if they didn’t approve?’ asks CNBC.

Nadella only responds with, ‘Let’s wait for it all to play out,’ before reiterating how the deal is actually good for competition and it ‘checks all the boxes.’

Microsoft is in a position where it can easily lay the blame at the CMA’s door. With most other regulators approving the acquisition, it makes the UK more of an outlier and thus people can point fingers at the CMA rather than the company in charge of actually distributing the games.

Such a move, however, would be a bold risk for Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. The UK is a core market for them, with Call Of Duty being the second best-selling video game franchise in the country, only losing out to FIFA .

The UK is also the only major market for Xbox in the world, after the US, and not selling Call Of Duty here risks creating a major backlash against Microsoft.

I also doubt Microsoft is planning to pull the plug in the UK market over the Activision deal.
It’d be catastrophic and the revenue loss would be immense. Sure, a threat may get the UK government to react though.

Given that the UK have blocked the Activision Blizzard / Microsoft merger: there is a non-zero chance that Activision Blizzard would just stop operating in the UK to comply/move staff over to the EU, if the UK holds up its decision.
US + EU market >> UK.

When asked if Microsoft would sell it’s products in the EU but not the UK, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said
“Lets wait for it all to play out”
The possibility of Microsoft pulling Activision games out of UK seems more like a reality with each passing day.
