An animated Zelda movie would absolutely get butts in theatres (pic: Nintendo)
Despite it being among Nintendo’s most popular franchises, apparently fan support is needed to get a Zelda movie off the ground.
The runaway success of The Super Mario Bros. movie guarantees that Nintendo and Illumination will work together again on a sequel. The real question, though, is whether this will lead to other Nintendo properties getting a movie adaptation.
Nintendo was already interested in other such projects before the Mario movie came out and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has insinuated that another of the company’s franchises is next in line for a silver screen debut.
The Legend Of Zelda seems like the safest bet, especially with how much money Tears Of The Kingdom is making , and series producer Eiji Aonuma has now expressed an interest in seeing it happen.
Presumably, Aonuma would be heavily involved in any Zelda movie, much like Miyamoto served as a producer on the Mario movie.
However, Aonuma admits that it’s ultimately not up to him and that his own vested interest isn’t enough to get the project greenlit.
‘I have to say, I am interested. For sure,’ he said when asked by Polygon about the prospect of a Zelda movie.
‘But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately.’
Tears Of The Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi follows this up with, ‘Maybe the voice of the fans is what’s important here,’ suggesting that fans need to let Nintendo know that a Zelda movie is worth making.
Honestly, we’d be shocked if conversations about a Zelda movie weren’t already happening within Nintendo, not only given that it’s a hugely popular franchise but because it’s one of the few with a clear, established lore and relatively complex storytelling.
At the very least, Aonuma’s comments imply that no Zelda movie has started development yet, meaning it could be a long while before fans get so much as a whisper of one.
There were once rumours of a live action Zelda Netflix show in 2015, but apparently Nintendo opted to can the entire project because Netflix purposefully leaked information on it.
