The whole Horizon Forbidden West franchise has sold 32.7 million copies says Sony



If you wondered why Sony was so keen on making Horizon spin-offs there’s a simple answer: it’s one of its biggest first party exclusives.



Horizon might be one of Sony’s newest franchises, starting in 2017 on the PlayStation 4, but you may be surprised to learn just how successful it’s been.



While celebrating its 20th anniversary, developer Guerrilla Games, has revealed that the Horizon Forbidden West has already sold over 8.4 million copies and the franchise as a whole 32.7 million.



That includes the original, Horizon Zero Dawn , as well as VR spin-off Horizon Call Of The Mountain . Assuming Call Of The Mountain’s sales are negligible, because it’s limited by its format, that means the original game has sold around 24 million.



By comparison the last two God Of War games have sold in excess of 34 million copies, with more if you include the pre-PlayStation 4 titles. Marvel’s Spider-Man sold more than 25 million copies all on its own, but as you can see the Horizon games are right up there with Sony’s biggest.



As pointed out in the PlayStation Blog , millions more people will have played the games, as these numbers are just how many they’ve sold and doesn’t account for the games being on PS Plus or part of the Play at Home promotion during the pandemic.

It’s obvious what this all means: more sequels. In fact, a third mainline game has already been confirmed to be in development at Guerrilla Games, although they haven’t yet given it a name or said anything about it.



There’s also a multiplayer spin-off , which is assumed to be a live service title, and talk of an MMO – although it seems that may already have been cancelled.



A Horizon TV show is also supposedly in the works and it’s clear that there is much more to come from the franchise, beyond just mainline sequels.
