First Mortal Kombat 12 teaser hints at full reboot via a grain of sand

First Mortal Kombat 12 teaser hints at full reboot via a grain of sand

NetherRealm has finally started teasing Mortal Kombat 12, with a few seconds of footage that suggests we’re in for some big changes.

You could be forgiven for not realising that Mortal Kombat 12 has already been announced , just in the least exciting way possible.

It was mentioned in passing during a Warner Bros. earnings call, complete with a promise that it would be released this year, but absolutely no hint of trailer, artwork, or even just a logo.

We still don’t have any of that, but we do now have a few seconds of pre-rendered trailer, which suggests it’s following on from the story at the end of Mortal Kombat 11’s DLC .

The idea that the new game would be continuing he story from the last one might not sound like much of a revelation, but Mortal Kombat 11 and its DLC Aftermath were all about time travel and both had multiple endings.

At the end of Aftermath’s good ending series lead Liu Kang gains control over Kronika’s Hourglass, with which he forges a ‘New Era.’

The video below is primarily NetherRealm thanking fans for 30 years of Mortal Kombat (its anniversary was last October), with multiple devs clearly having been there for the whole time.

Series co-creator Ed Boon is the last to speak and ends by saying, ‘We’re not quite done yet.’

After that is a few seconds of animation which seems to show grains of sand within the hourglass, one of which explodes.

The implication appears to be that this is signalling a series reboot and that whatever the New Era is, it won’t be a direct continuation of what’s come before.

The gameplay is unlikely to be radically different from Mortal Kombat 11 but in terms of the plot and the roster of characters all bets are off.

Of course, we’ll need a proper reveal to know for sure but there’s still no indication of when that will happen. But perhaps at one of the preview showcase planned for this summer…
