Nintendo blatantly hints at a Legend Of Zelda movie

Nintendo blatantly hints at a Legend Of Zelda movie
It does seem the obvious next step (pic: Nintendo)

Although Shigeru Miyamoto is keeping quiet about the next Nintendo movie, it’s safe to assume it’ll be a Legend Of Zelda adaptation.

Whether you want them or not, more Nintendo movies are going to happen. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is making far too much money for the company to stop after just one, and already seems on track to earn over $1 billion (about £806 million).

A sequel is most certainly guaranteed ( and even hinted at ), but the more pressing question is which Nintendo franchise will be adapted for the big screen next.

Nintendo obviously isn’t going to play its hand just yet, but Mario creator and movie producer Shigeru Miyamoto seems to have already hinted that the next movie project will be for another franchise and not the Mario sequel.

He didn’t say what the next film would be but The Legend Of Zelda seems like the most obvious choice.

It’s one of Nintendo’s best-selling franchises, only trailing behind Mario, Mario Kart, and Pokémon; the last of which has already seen multiple animated movie adaptations plus the live action Detective Pikachu .

‘Nintendo is like a talent agency,’ says Miyamoto in an interview with Nikkei (translated by VGC ). ‘We have many other entertainers on our roster.

‘There are various ways to develop characters (for the screen), including characters that are suitable for film and characters that are well known.’

If Nintendo is looking into characters that both suit a movie and are well known, then The Legend Of Zelda easily fits both categories, given its propensity for fantasy adventure stories.

Although this then raises questions about whether Nintendo will want to adapt a specific game like Breath Of The Wild or Ocarina Of Time or do something entirely original. There’s also lots of other questions, like whether it’ll be live action or not and if Link will speak. Given the success of the Mario movie, animated does seem most likely, as even back in 2021, before the Mario movie even had a trailer, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said they were considering animated adaptations for other properties.

Perhaps the biggest question is who would make the movie. Illumination did fine with Mario but the creators of Minions have never made anything more serious and many would feel worried about them handling the more serious tone of Zelda.

It’s unclear exactly what kind of deal Nintendo has with Universal Pictures, but if it’s first refusal, at the very least, Universal also own Dreamworks, so why not let the makers of Puss In Boots handle a Zelda movie, while Illumination is busy with the Mario sequel?
