Beyond Good And Evil 2 – it doesn’t like to rush (pic: Ubisoft)
Although it still, somehow, hasn’t been cancelled, Beyond Good And Evil doesn’t sound like its anywhere close to being finished.
If Ubisoft were to cancel Beyond Good And Evil 2 it would probably count as the least surprising game news ever. The sequel to 2003’s cult favourite was officially announced in 2008 and yet still hasn’t shown any proper gameplay or offered any real evidence that it exists as anything but prototypes and tech demos.
The sequel seemed to be rebooted in 2017, with a completely different teaser trailer that bore no resemblance to the original game, with subsequent comments from the developers implying it has more in common with No Man’s Sky than the original’s Zelda style action adventure.
Despite creator Michel Ancel leaving Ubisoft , and the games industry, in 2020 the game still wasn’t cancelled and now evidence has emerged that new developers are still being hired to work on it, including concept artists.
As the job title implies, you’d normally expect concept artists to only be hired at the beginning of a project, so whether this means it’s been rebooted again is unclear. Although a report from last year did suggest the game’s development ‘lacks direction.’
The fist role, listed at Ubisoft Barcelona, isn’t for a junior artist, to just work on some background assets, but a Senior Concept Artist , implying they haven’t got one at the moment.
In fact, there’re two Senior Concept Artist roles currently being advertised by Ubisoft, with the other one being at their Paris studio.
Ubisoft Montpellier is still believed to be taking the lead on the sequel, so these other two are likely to be only support studios. Although given how muddled the game’s development has been up to this point, perhaps Montpellier is no longer involved after Ancel left.
It all gives the impression that the game is nowhere near completion, although if you wanted to be more optimistic you could say that maybe this indicates that it is finally getting somewhere and that both studios need to recruit more people to keep pace with the work.
It is hard to be optimistic though, as Beyond Good And Evil 2 recently broke the world record for the most delayed video game ever , making Duke Nukem Forever look like a quick turnaround by comparison.
