Final Fantasy 16 plot details leak after new trailer is a hit with fans

Final Fantasy 16 plot details leak after new trailer is a hit with fans

In the wake of a rather spectacular looking Final Fantasy 16 showcase, some major p lot spoilers have already leaked.

In case you missed it, Sony’s latest State of Play presentation focused entirely on Final Fantasy 16 , which makes sense as it’s the PlayStation 5 ’s next major exclusive and is launching in just a couple of months.

Square Enix hasn’t been shy about sharing details over the last several months, with producer Naoki Yoshida explaining the decisions behind not making the game open world and ditching turn-based combat in favour of real-time action.

The State of Play had about 20 minutes of entirely new footage and while it wasn’t all focused on the action, it was most definitely the highlight, particularly the giant Eikon fights that Yoshida describes as ‘the shining point’ of Final Fantasy 16.

Previous trailers and previews have been hyping these up for a while now, but the presentation was surprisingly unrestrained, showing off several of these encounters.

As a reminder, at certain times, protagonist Clive will be able to transform into different Eikons (summons from previous Final Fantasy games). Yoshida already mentioned that each Eikon battle will play out differently and we get to see exactly what he meant.

Fights where you play as the Phoenix Eikon resemble an on-rails shooter, whereas fights where you control Ifrit are more like a ‘heavyweight wrestling match.’

Perhaps the most spectacular of the bunch is one fight against something called Titan Lost, a creature so gigantic that it makes the already large Ifrit look like a gnat as it runs up its arm.

Idk about anyone else but I’m so glad I watched the Final Fantasy 16 state of play they just had. I’m even more hyped than I was to begin with, and I didn’t think that was possible. Also, a few ppl I know (who are not too good at action games) are now sold on getting 16! 🥳🥳 — TrixieJean (Midnights) ready for FF7:CCR (@CecilsTrixieJ) April 13, 2023

Final Fantasy 16 State of Play was so good. Impressive that they showed so much but so little at the same time. — Umar Bastra (@SaveTheQueenIX) April 14, 2023

Final Fantasy 16 looks unbelievable!!! Watched the state of play in complete amazement…. Let’s Goooooo — Sean Murray 2.0 (The Mean Version) (@SeanMurrayNJ) April 14, 2023

We know that Clive will obtain more Eikons as the game progresses, although the footage shown only ever sees him transform into either Phoenix or Ifrit. So it’s unclear if you’ll actually be able to play as any of the others.

Yoshida says that each Eikon battle will be unique in terms of gameplay, so that does seem to imply there’s more than two. Or maybe he just meant using their abilities in regular combat.

Clive will be able to channel the power of the other Eikons during regular combat, as demonstrated by an ability screen. Each one gets its own section and you’ll be able to choose which abilities to prioritise unlocking, such as lighting based projectiles with Ramuh.

In the meantime, it seems some potential spoilers may have already found their way online. It’s been noted that an old 4chan post from January correctly named two new characters featured in the new footage – Charon and Goetz – long before they were officially announced. The same post is filled with numerous plot details, including a curiously detailed explanation of all the sex scenes, and there’s now a good chance they’re accurate too.

We obviously won’t be sharing any of the details ourselves but just be careful about looking up anything Final Fantasy 16 related, since those spoilers are certain to be shared around a lot between now and June.

Final Fantasy 16 launches for PlayStation 5 on June 22.
