Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom – what did you think? (pic: Nintendo)

The Friday letters page doesn’t think The Super Mario Bros Movie counts as art, as one reader discovers Hotel Dusk: Room 215.

Pulling you back in Had little enthusiasm for Zelda : Tears Of The Kingdom originally, having mentioned previously how I feel about Breath Of The Wild after putting 200+ hours into in, but coming away seeing it as less of a Zelda as time passes. I recently started it again, just to see, to recapture that magic I felt originally… but I just found it all aimless, empty. I know what’s to come, how epic the divine beasts feel, how a smile creeps across the face as you meet your first Goron or Zora, but I don’t want to put dozens more aimless hours into what is essentially a replay.

Then that final trailer drops for Tears Of The Kingdom and… are they bosses, like actual bosses? Puzzles in the environment, actual environmental puzzles? Ganondorf looks like Ganondorf; towns; allies; Zelda’s silky, soothing accent; could I abide breakable bloody weapons for all this? Maybe, maybe. Da daa, da da da da daaaa… da da da daaa (you know the rest). big boy bent

Which Link? Nintendo. You damn wizards, conjuring up a trailer like that and showing us a game like this. It looks fantastic. I’m actually going abroad the same month it comes out. 12 days after the launch, so I’ll be playing on a very long flight. Good job on choosing a perfect date Nintendo.

One last thing. Zelda and Link deserve marriage. Let him settle down and have his peace. Link deserves it. Shahzaib Sadiq

Inside job Normally I’d be writing to mention all the positives of the new Zelda trailer but, man, that Final Fantasy 16 trailer was totally bonkers. There was so much going on in those Eikon battles I felt slightly overwhelmed. Combat certainly looks great from what I saw. Not sure whether the story will have much weight, but it sure does look a lot of fun. Main problem being that there’s only a month between Zelda and Final Fantasy’s release.

Hopefully the weather’s bad so there’s no guilt in staying glued to the TV screen. Wonk

Artless product Films such as the Super Mario movie wouldn’t be classed as art, the creators would class them as entertainment products. If they have a critical appreciation, then that’s a bonus. If a reviewer doesn’t have an interest in said product then surely they should not be reviewing said product, as their bias for not caring or understanding a product would affect their final review.

In GC’s case the main team outsourced the FIFA games as the main team doesn’t have any interest in football, I am not sure if that is still the case. Alek Kazam

GC: All creative endeavours are art, just not necessarily good art. Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the film’s co-producers, do you imagine he thinks it’s just product?

Minor to some In response to Danson’s comments regarding the importance of 60fps in games, I feel they’re being a little disingenuous. To have a game running at 60fps instead of 30fps makes a big difference to its smoothness and responsiveness, making it an overall nicer experience all-round. To describe it as a ‘minor option’ is inaccurate.

I appreciate some people won’t be consciously aware of the difference between 30fps and 60fps in real terms, but many of us are and appreciate the fact that so many games this generation now have a 60fps or performance option.

Personally, I’ve been an advocate for 60fps gameplay since the Dreamcast/PlayStation 2 days when suddenly we had consoles capable of running 3D games at such a high framerate. Ever since, I’ve been conscious of a game’s smoothness and can tell you in a second whether a game is running at 30fps or 60fps, whether I’m the one controlling the game or not. Adzz86 (PSN ID)

A real Cing-er Thank you to Alucard, for bringing to my attention Hotel Dusk: Room 215 in last weekend’s Hot Topic. I wasn’t aware of the game before but after reading the letter it sounded right up my street. So I picked up a copy from one of my local CeX stores for only £8. Really enjoying it so far.

It’s like an interactive book, with how you have to hold the DS. The screen set-up even caters for left-handed people like me! Nice graphics as well. They remind me of the Take on Me video by a-ha. Tony- -1975 (PSN ID)

GC: It has a sequel called Last Window: The Secret Of Cape West, which you may find more difficult to track down. Developer Cing also made the two Another Code games, which are relatively similar, before they went bust in 2010.

Dead service It is with no small degree of sadness that I write to inform you that the rather charming Disgaea RPG for mobiles will be closing its servers as of May 12th. I saw the in-game notice this Wednesday just gone.

This is quite a shame, as while it is and was a gacha game and you could go very deep down the rabbit hole, it was never aggressive or greedy – in fact, it was always quite generous. There are two battle passes, of course. One they actually call the battle pass and then a bingo event that happens every six weeks or so. Paying a few quid or so would get you all the stuff they offered – like new characters, items, netherquartz crystals, etc.

There would often be new story events that were good, if poorly translated fun. So yeah, what a pity. Another live service bites the dust. Which I suppose is what it is. I don’t know if that means it will become completely unplayable after May 12, but I would imagine so. DMR

Reap the whirlwind I feel I should be sympathetic towards these leakers that keep getting get hounded by Nintendo but… I don’t? Not because I’m a diehard fan but because it’s actually kind of nice to see someone one the internet be faced with the consequences of their actions.

They were told not to do what they did, they were shown what would happened if they did it, and then they carried on anyway. Don’t mess with Nintendo’s stuff! How many times do people have to be told? Kardo

Second chance Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider has certainly matched my expectations with its richly detailed pixel art, smooth gameplay, engaging level design, and stellar soundtrack.

There’s also an auxiliary weapon system at your disposal that you can embiggen with every boss you vanquish, Mega Man style. And a cool perk system that can grant you abilities such as a double jump and stronger primary attack to reduce the hardships of what is already a pretty difficult game.

The frame rate can occasionally feel inconsistent and some of the end of level bosses aren’t as challenging and visually appealing as the larger mini- bosses, but other than that this is yet another zinger from Brazilian indie devs JoyMasher, if you ask me.

If you have fond memories of highly regard 16-bit classics such as Strider, The Revenge Of Shinobi, Shinobi 3: The Return Of The Master, Mega Man X, and especially the elusive, eye-wateringly expensive SNES curio Hagane, then chances are you’ll be over the moon with this production. It’s a splendid slice of retro flavoured gaming.

Can we expect an end of year round-up of some indie games you’d missed like last year, GC? Galvanized Gamer

GC: Probably, but we can’t promise it will include Moonrider. We did already play it for an hour or so and found it a little underwhelming.

Inbox also-rans Wait, just seen the new Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom trailer and… does Link turn into Ganondorf?! Bad Edit

GC: We don’t think so? Although, his arm appears to get possessed by the same red mass that Ganondorf seems to control.

Time telling you you’re one of the most influential people in the world seems about the most meaningless accolade you can get, but I’m glad Hidetaka Miyazaki got it anyway . Sender

This week’s Hot Topic The subject for this weekend’s Inbox asks the obvious question of the moment: following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie what other video game would you like to see turned into an animated film?

It doesn’t have to be Nintendo related, or family friendly, and it can be either CGI or hand animated (or stop motion). Most video game movie ideas are based on the idea that the film would be live action but what do you think would work better animated?

Do you think animation is better for video game adaptations in general and when is live action still preferable? What actors would you imagine for the parts and do you think they’d actually do it?
