Capcom announces new Street Fighter movie as Resident Evil reboot rumoured

Capcom announces new Street Fighter movie as Resident Evil reboot rumoured

Not only is there going to be a new Street Fighter film but rumours suggest that the Resident film series is getting its second reboot.

Although it’s The Last Of Us which has been getting all the critical praise the success of movies such as Uncharted and Sonic The Hedgehog already paved the way for more live action adaptations, and it’s only a matter of time until more get announced… starting with a new Street Fighter film.

There’s already been two – 1994’s camp classic and the quickly forgotten The Legend Of Chun-Li from 2009 – but while the 90s one is still popular for Raul Julia’s gloriously over-the-top performance it was, unlike the Resident Evil films, never a box office success.

Earlier in the week the film and TV rights to Street Fighter were bought by Legendary Entertainment, which also produced the Detective Pikachu movie, and now Capcom has announced that there will be a third movie, no doubt inspired by the upcoming Street Fighter 6 .

There’s zero information about the film so far, and no indication of any TV plans, but Legendary are a fairly big production house, which implies something pretty big budget.

Although Capcom’s 2000 era Resident Evil films were, unlike most other video game adaptations, highly successful, the more recent films have fared less well. Monster Hunter was a flop and so was reboot Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City , despite sticking closer to the story of the games.

According to rumours though they’re going to try again, with a second reboot called Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

The Umbrella Chronicles was the name of a 2007 lightgun game for the Wii, which recapped the events of Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 1, and Resident Evil 3 from the perspective of Albert Wesker (Resident Evil 2 was left for follow-up The Darkside Chronicles, for some reason).

Using the same name may just be a coincidence, since the game is largely forgotten now, but if it does have the same premise that immediately seems a mistake, since trying to cover too many of the games at once was one of the main complaints of Welcome To Racoon City.

Website Geek Vibe Nation claims that Paul W. S. Anderson, who directed the first four 2000 films, will be the producer, but beyond that they offer no more information – or indeed proof.

The news is hardly surprising though and it’s certain the recent live action successes will spawn a whole new wave of movies and TV shows.

In fact, in today’s third piece of movie news it’s been announced that the Five Nights At Freddy’s film will be out this Halloween, in both cinemas and streaming channel Peacock.

According to Variety , it’s a Blumhouse production, which implies something cheap and nasty, but that seems entirely in keeping with the game itself.

The film stars Matthew Lillard and Mary Stuart Masterson and is directed by Emma Tammi, who directed well-received western horror film The Wind .

Update:

Wait, that’s not all! There’s actually a fourth new announcement today, with the long delayed Minecraft movie getting a new release date of April 5, 2025.

The film has been in development hell for over a decade but still seems to have Jason Momoa attached to star, presumably as Steve, with Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess also on board.

The original idea was that it would be live action, but how that’s going to work given what Minecraft looks like has always been a mystery.
