Resident Evil 4 – Ashley is too brave, apparently (pic: Capcom)



Despite critical acclaim and commercial success some fans are upset with Resident Evil 4 because Leon doesn’t look up Ashley’s skirt anymore.



There was originally a lot of trepidation around the idea of a remake of Resident Evil 4 , but in the end it’s become one of the most universally beloved games of recent months, with a 93 Metacritic score and the second biggest launch ever for the series.



You can never please absolutely everyone though and a small number of vocal fans have already harassed the voice actress for Ada Wong , for not being ‘sexy’ enough.



Now the same types have started review bombing the game on Metacritic, because they’re upset that Leon is no longer a sex pest.



Although the critic score for the game is 93 the user score (which for some reason works on a 10-point scale) is just 6.8 on PlayStation 5 and goes as low as 3.7 for the PlayStation 4 version, with the most consistent complaint being that it’s too ‘woke.’



Voice actress Lily Gao continues to be the focus for many of the complaints but a number of the reviews also complain about the removal of lines from the original, such as Leon commenting on Ashley’s ‘ballistics’ – lines that were iffy 18 years ago but now seem beyond the pale.



A lot of similarly cheesy, but not sexist, lines have also been removed, such as Leon saying ‘No thanks, bro’ to Salazar and making a terrible joke about whether he has a detachable hand or not.



The complaints also include the fact that Leon no longer looks up Ashley’s skirt, when you aim in that direction while she’s at the top of a ladder, which used to see her accuse Leon of being a ‘pervert.’









Other complaints revolve around the fact that both Ashley and Ada are now portrayed as being too ‘brave,’ with some people upset that they show too much agency. They also don’t like the fact that Ashley wears tights now.



‘Censored ***slop from nu-Capcom because according to them nothing appealing to males like the original can ever be added in game in modern times. Ada Wong censored + horrible voice actress, Ashley censored, politically correct reworks of dialogues. Trash through and through. Keep away,’ reads a review from Vasx.



Other reviews pretend that the graphics are sub-par or there are problems with the gameplay, with one review even complaining about microtransactions – despite the fact that the game has none.



‘There’s way too many fake positive reviews, and review bomb to counterbalance, Metacritic, like old game medias, has lost ANY relevance. WHO KNOWS whether this vapid, lazy, useless, cut-content and censored remake of a masterpiece is good, meh or bad?,’ writes ogretactic.



‘I’m pretty sure it’s around meh but since medias are corrupted to their bones and Metacritic has done nothing against bots of fake positives reviews that are on every games and movies…WHO KNOWS?’

All the negative reviews have suddenly appeared in the last couple of days, despite the game having been out for almost two weeks now, so the review bombing is no doubt being organised on a forum or Discord somewhere.



Unfortunately, the practice has become sadly commonplace for any game that earns the ire of unhinged fans and there doesn’t seem to be any way of stopping it.
