The greenest Xbox controller ever is made out of reclaimed plastic, including old controllers parts, and comes with a rechargeable battery.

Microsoft has made so many different Xbox controllers, in so many different colours, it becomes easy to lose interest, but the new Remix controller is something brand new… sort of.

Announced on Earth Day, it utilises recycled plastic, including car headlight covers, plastic water jugs, CDs, and parts of other controllers.

Like most things, it’s not 100% recycled though and in fact only one-third is made from regrind and reclaimed materials. But that’s still one-third more than most other controllers.

To try and make the controller seem even more sustainable it comes bundled with a rechargeable battery pack, although that raises the price to £74.99.

Microsoft has previously been criticised for relying on batteries to power its controller. Until recently the Xbox was also criticised for using up much more power than the PlayStation 5 when idle.

Attempts have since been made to improve the Xbox’s energy efficiency , especially in light of the current cost of living crisis, with a number of new features introduced to try and cut down and make it obvious how much energy you’re using.

By comparison, Sony has made far fewer variations of the DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5. This is likely due to component shortages and the general problem in manufacturing new hardware post-pandemic.

That means, perhaps in a year or so, that we’ll likely get back to how things used to be, with lots of special edition consoles and controllers to promote specific games.

Microsoft announced just such a thing for Diablo 4 last month and Nintendo has a specially branded Switch OLED coming out to promote Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom.
