Fortnite is up to something fishy for April Fool’s Day

Looks like Fortnite is getting ready for some April Fool’s shenanigans as funky fish pictures show up on the game’s social media accounts.

Epic Games sure knows how to build up anticipation for Fortnite’s big reveals, whether it’s by dropping cryptic hints through map coordinates or teasing players with mysterious trailers.

That’s why a bunch of players have started thinking that something is on the way, after they noticed a weird pattern on one of Fortnite’s regional Twitter accounts.

The clues seem to be hidden within a series of pictures displaying fish in the distinctive style of Fortnite, swimming aimlessly and appearing disinterested… so, make of that what you will.

The images are akin to a jigsaw puzzle piece, forming a bigger picture that remains unfinished, as pointed out by well-known Fortnite leaker Shiina.

The most recent image was revealed around 12pm on Friday, March 31 and it features a Light Blue Shield Fish that has a drawing of an Orange Flopper on it.

As you may know, Fortnite France tweeted a mysterious fish picture last weekend 🤔 They’ve been posting more of them the last few days, and we only need 3 more pictures to get a big one! 👀 It MAY be irrelevant to people outside the French community, but it’s worth mentioning! pic.twitter.com/DYLaJ0qijk — Shiina (@ShiinaBR) March 31, 2023

In Fortnite, fish are consumable items that can be caught as part of the fishing mechanic, with over 44 different types of fish having been featured in the game.

Fish typically have healing properties, so it’s not a bad tactic to catch one to get some energy back if you find yourself in a challenging position.

As soon as Fortnite players noticed the posts on Fortnite France’s account they started speculating what their meaning could be, with the majority assuming it must be an April Fool’s joke.

This theory kind of makes sense as the final two images are expected to come out by April 1.

It’s also important to note that April Fool’s Day is known as ‘poisson d’avril’ (April Fish) as it’s a tradition hang paper fish on the back of the people you want to prank, so the photos could be merely referencing this.

If this isn’t just a well-planned prank for the French, the photos do seem like they could also tie into a couple of recent items added to Fortnite.

One player noticed that the most recent Fortnite update, which revealed the special Spring Breakout event , also added a new fish-themed spray.

A recent leak also uncovered 25 Survey skins that are currently in production for Fortnite, with some of them boasting fish-related themes, like the Koi variant for Chigusa.

For now, all you can do is wait until April Fool’s Day to figure out whether the fish photos have a deeper message or are just a silly prank.
