PS5 sales in February broke all PlayStation records in the US

PS5 sales in February broke all PlayStation records in the US

Sony has just had its best February ever in the US, and it didn’t even need to release any new games to achieve it.

Now that Microsoft seems to have won the battle , to allow it to buy Activision Blizzard , one of its main arguments has been that Sony is in such a dominant position, it’s them that have the monopoly. However, that’s not true in Japan and generally it’s not true in the US, where sales tend to be largely neck-and-neck… but not last month.

The latest NPD sales results reveal that not only was the PlayStation 5 the best-selling console in the US during February 2023 but that it was Sony’s best February ever, for any console.

What’s interesting is that it managed this feat without any major new first party releases, with the multiformat Hogwarts Legacy being the number one selling game and, along with increased availability of the PlayStation 5 console, the main reason for the record-breaking results.

Exact sales figures are never revealed by chart trackers the NPD, but while Sony’s success was not due to any new release the God Of War Ragnarök console bundle did play a significant role in the month’s results.

Almost all US retailers reduced its price by $50 (£40), meaning that the game itself was essentially just $10. This wasn’t reflected in the software charts, where the game sat only at number 11, but clearly helped with hardware sales.

The only new game Sony released in February was PlayStation VR2 title Horizon Call Of The Mountain, but everything so far suggests that VR sales have been slow, with the game not appearing anywhere in the top 20.

Sony does release hardware sales figures with its quarterly reports, with the PlayStation 5 now boasting a worldwide total of over 30 million. Microsoft never reveals sales figures but unofficial estimates put the worldwide total for the Xbox Series X/S at around 20 million.
