Resident Evil 4 ending hints at Resident Evil 5 remake

Resident Evil 4 ending hints at Resident Evil 5 remake

Capcom could already have its next Resident Evil remake in mind and, no, it’s still probably not Code: Veronica.

Now that Capcom has four mainline Resident Evil remakes under its belt, you might be wondering if the company plans on pumping the brakes to focus on more original projects, like the inevitable Resident Evil 9.

Given how financially successful they’ve been, though, with Resident Evil 4 pushing 3 million units in just two days , Capcom still has plenty of reasons to give older titles a modern day glow up – even if all the obvious remakes have now been done.

Capcom may have already teased what its next remake will be via Resident Evil 4’s ending. Given we’ll be discussing quite a bit about the story of Resident Evil 4, and the supposed next remake, we advise you to stop reading any further if you want to avoid spoilers.

At the end of the game, while Leon and Ashley jet-ski away to safety, Ada Wong (the Catwoman to Leon’s Batman) also manages to escape, with a sample of the Las Plagas virus used to turn Resident Evil 4’s many villagers into zombie-like monstrostries.

It is then revealed that she did so under the orders of recurring villain Albert Wesker. While this isn’t really a change from the original game, Wesker never actually appeared in Resident Evil 4’s main story.

His involvement was reserved for the Separate Ways side story, something that’s notably absent from the remake and is believed to be coming later as DLC .

Resident Evil 4 – would Wesker be just as hammy and over the top in a Resident Evil 5 remake? (pic: Capcom)

In the remake, you see him talking with Ada about what he plans to do with the sample and while he doesn’t tell her exactly what, he mentions that it will involve billions of casualties.

Aside from being very different to their conversation in Separate Ways, this seems like explicit foreshadowing to his actions in Resident Evil 5, where he plots to spread something called the Uroboros virus across the entire planet, which will mutate anyone it doesn’t kill into superhuman monsters.

As if that wasn’t enough, Wesker’s big computer screen contains direct references to Resident Evil 5 that more eagle-eyed fans have already spotted.

The first is a profile picture of Excella Gionne, Wesker’s partner in crime in Resident Evil 5. The second is what appears to be the underground garden from the same game, where the Stairway to the Sun, a fictional African plant, grows.

Resident Evil 4 – you have to squint a bit but those very much look like Resident Evil 5 references (pic: Capcom)

What makes this plant significant is that it contains the Progenitor virus, something which led to the creation of other Resident Evil viruses such as the T-virus – the same thing that created the tyrant enemies from the first game and utlimately Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 .

Given how unambiguous these references are, this is being taken as evidence of Capcom gearing up to remake Resident Evil 5. If it is, it would certainly require a more substantial rethink compared to previous remakes and potentially result in something that deviates far more from the original, unlike the relatively faithful Resident Evil 4.

Some fans would much rather Capcom remake Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and we’d have to agree since it hasn’t aged anywhere near as gracefully as its contemporaries and would benefit from a modern overhaul.

Unfortunately, Capcom doesn’t appear to share fans’ interest, with Resident Evil 4’s producer refusing to commit to the idea when asked, only saying it could happen if the ‘opportunity comes, maybe.’

A new remake of Resident Evil 1 does seem inevitable at some point, as while the existing one for the GameCube is highly regarded it is over two decades old at this point.

Curiously, Capcom has shown no interest in remaking it again, so perhaps it’ll actually end up being the final remake rather than the first.
