Capcom has revealed that Resident Evil 4 is the best-selling remake so far, and the publisher thinks it’s all due to the Chainsaw Demo.

Hearing that the remake of Resident Evil 4 is selling well is hardly a surprise. It outselling the original GameCube release was interesting, but that was practically a given thanks to the game’s multiplatform launch.

The best way to determine how much of a success the game has been for Capcom is to compare it with the previous remakes, because Resident Evil 4 is blowing its predecessors out of the water.

A report by Capcom reveals that the game has sold more than 3 million copies in just its first two days of release, outpacing every other Resident Evil game in recent memory.

The Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil Village took four days to reach 3 million sales, and the Resident Evil 3 remake took even longer, only managing 2 million sales in its first five days.

Capcom attributes Resident Evil 4’s success to not just the generous review scores but also the Chainsaw Demo that lets you try out the game’s opening, which includes its iconic village set piece .

The original game’s legacy is obviously a contributing factor too. To this day, it’s widely regarded as one of the best video games ever made, having been ported to every platform under the sun.

That said, Resident Evil 4’s remake is still only the second fastest-selling entry in the series. Strangely, the record still belongs to the much maligned Resident Evil 6, which despite being by far the least popular mainline entry sold 4.5 million units within two days .

Capcom adds that the Resident Evil franchise’s cumulative sales since the original 1996 game are now sat at 135 million units, although this is as of December 2022, so it hasn’t accounted for Resident Evil 4’s sales yet.

If Resident Evil 4 alone has managed at least 3 million, then the franchise’s total sales are almost at 140 million.

While Capcom has only announced free updates for the Mercenaries mini-game and VR mode , it’s believed the company also plans on releasing paid-for DLC for Resident Evil 4.

The original game’s Separate Ways mode, a side story starring Ada Wong, is absent from the remake, but is mentioned within the remake’s files, suggesting it will be added at a later date.

Resident Evil 4 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
