FIFA 23 women’s team update is getting bashed by the actual players

FIFA 23 women’s team update is getting bashed by the actual players

The new women’s team update for FIFA 23 has had a big reaction, but only because the players are upset with how they look in-game.

You would think with how much money the FIFA franchise makes that modern entries would be able to faithfully recreate the look of its players in-game. Alas, this isn’t quite the case.

While nowhere near as bad as the eldritch nightmares that eFootball 2022 spawned when it launched, FIFA 23 ’s depictions of players aren’t exactly the most flattering.

FIFA 23’s graphics have recently become a talking point once more, following an update that adds more women’s teams, with many, including the women players themselves, lambasting EA over how they look in-game.

Women’s football has been part of FIFA 23 since day one (and was a key selling point) but the newest update brings more players and teams that are part of the European UEFA Women’s Championship League and the US’s National Women’s Soccer League.

Unfortunately, several of them look nothing like the actual players and that’s not just us saying that; the players who lent their likenesses to the game aren’t impressed with the results either.

‘I’m grateful EA Sports is finally including the NWSL but this does not represent me,’ says Houston Dash player Caprice Dydasco, who tweets a side-by-side comparison of herself and her noticeably lighter skinned game appearance.

They whitewashed you bad. Did they lose your face scans? Who else got done like this and is there a pattern? — Jessica Varin (@jessicavarin) March 22, 2023

Canadian player Janine Beckie refers to her in-game self as her long-lost fraternal twin while Angel City FC defender Madison Hammond emphatically calls her counterpart ‘simply not it!’

Although Hammond seems to find it somewhat amusing, since she’s made her game model her new profile picture on Twitter.

did they even do face scans for you guys bc this is so 💀💀 — sophie (@sapphospickle) March 22, 2023

Sydney Leroux, another Angel City FC player, has been the most vocal critic and while she, like Hammond, now uses an image of her in-game model as a profile pic, she doesn’t find the whole thing quite as funny as others.

‘Please tell me I did not do an entire body scan for that,’ she comments over a clip of her game self celebrating a goal , while looking absolutely nothing like her.

I couldn’t even take it serious when I started playing 😭 they did you so wrong — 🦋 Destiny 🦋 (@desiluvsmb) March 22, 2023

She’s also highlighted other players, such as Welsh player Jessica Fishlock getting a five o’clock shadow and one unnamed player who appears completely bald.

‘I know you expect women to just be thankful and grateful that you’ve given us a little sliver of publicity but please stop wasting our time,’ she tweets.

Fans are just as flabbergasted and have either joined in on the mockery or said that this is simply par for the course for the FIFA games. As for EA itself, it has not issued any sort of response, though we’ll be sure to update the story should it provide a statement.

To be fair this happening to players throughout the game. Nunez was bald for months — Sam-I-Am (@SammIK92) March 23, 2023
