Dead Island 2 – it now comes out the same day as Advance Wars (pic: Deep Silver)



For once, Dead Island 2 isn’t being delayed, but its early launch may have been influenced by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.



Although its return to the public spotlight made quite a splash at last year’s Gamescom, with new gameplay and a release date , Dead Island 2 has never shaken off its reputation for being constantly delayed .



It was even delayed again last year, just a few months after its Gamescom appearance. So, any subsequent announcement regarding its release date means it’s been hit with another delay, right? Wrong. In fact, the exact opposite.



Not only have developer Dambuster Studios and publisher Deep Silver confirmed that the game has gone gold, but it’s getting reverse delayed and will now release one week earlier than planned, on April 21.



The announcement video on social media even pokes fun at its history of delays, showing a montage of (we assume real) fan comments claiming that it will be delayed again. Other comments include requests for further polish and for it to launch early.



No exact explanation has been given for why its release date has moved up, but presumably development has progressed more smoothly than expected. Or, if we take the official Twitter account at face value, it’s just because a fan asked for it to launch a week early.

That said, its original launch date of April 28 is also when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor comes out, following its delay from March .



Considering its Star Wars, we wouldn’t be surprised if Deep Silver pulled Dead Island 2 forward so it wouldn’t have to compete against it and risk being overshadowed.



It now shares a release date with Nintendo’s Advance Wars remake , which is also famous for suffering long delays – so much so that some assumed it was cancelled. Although the circumstances for that are very different.

A sequel to the original 2011 game, Dead Island 2 is an action role-player set in a quarantined and zombie filled Los Angeles.



Over the years, the game has been passed between several different studios, after Techland, the developer of the first Dead Island, moved away to work on the Dying Light franchise.



Dead Island 2 launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on April 21.
