New mobile game turns retro Sega games into sexy anime girls

The latest game from the creator of NieR involves a dystopian future where Sega has taken over the world and rules it with an iron fist.

Full disclosure: we are not making any of this up. Honest. A new mobile game called 404 GAME RE:SET has just been unveiled and the plot involves an alternative future where Sega has become an evil corporation that dominates the entire world.

The only way to fight back against them is the female personifications of various classic Sega games, including OutRun, After Burner, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter. Judging by the website at least four more are due to be unveiled later.

It’s some kind of gatcha game for iOS and Android, that’s currently only announced for Japan, and just to explain away some of the weirdness it’s by Yoko Taro, creator of the gloriously odd NieR series.

The other explain is that the idea is almost certainly inspired by the Kantai Collection, aka KanColle, franchise, which originally started as a browser-based game.

It features ‘special human girls who don weaponised outfits and possess the spirit of historical naval vessels’ (again, we’re not making this up, that’s straight from Wikipedia), so while the idea of portraying Sega coin-ops as anime girls is still really weird the strangest thing is that it’s not actually that original.

If it is a gatcha game we’re not sure what the chances are of it being any good, but according to a translation of the announcement by VGC , Taro explains how he came up with the backstory:

‘It’s a game that features Sega’s IP, so I thought Sega should be in the game, but I didn’t think Sega would want to see a game that portrayed it well, so I portrayed it negatively.

‘It’s a world that imagines that if things were to go well for Sega but then got out of control, it could end up like this.’

So maybe it is a good job the Dreamcast was a flop, or otherwise Sega would’ve taken over the world and the only thing we’d have to save us would be anthropomorphic coin-op cabinets.

That’s a lucky break for humanity but if you want to know more about this nightmare alternative future here’s the official website .
