Star Wars Jedi: Survivor gameplay has a cool homage to Super Metroid

Nine minutes of new Star Wars Jedi: Survivor footage shows off a very dusty looking planet and more Metroid influences.

We had hoped that Respawn would treat us to new gameplay footage for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor , to make up for the month-long delay . Thankfully, it’s done exactly that.

While the new nine minutes of footage showcases a range of aspects – exploration, combat, etc. – it seems its main purpose is to highlight a new planet that protagonist Cal will get to explore: Koboh.

Koboh is a brand new location for the Star Wars franchise, but we can’t help but be disappointed that it looks to be a typical dusty, quarry-like planet rather than anything truly alien.

You could tell us this was just another part of Tatooine and we’d believe you. Either way, it seems to be home to pirates/smugglers, who don’t like Cal and are using reprogrammed battle droids from the prequel movies.

The game looks graphically impressive, thanks to it running only on current gen hardware, but there’s not much insight into the actual plot, which remains something of a mystery.

There’re plenty of instances of combat to demonstrate some of Cal’s new fighting styles. While you could unlock a double-bladed lightsaber in the first game , Cal will have access to it from the get-go this time.

You can also see him split it into two separate lightsabers and then merge them back together, confirming that swapping between styles will be seamless.

The footage doesn’t show Cal using his new blaster , though. So maybe that’s something you’ll need to unlock later in the story.

We also see some of Cal’s Force powers, such as pushing unsuspecting enemies off cliff edges. One entirely new power appears to slow down enemies during combat, with Cal spreading his arms out and turning the screen blue for a spell.

One fun detail is around the 4:30 mark, where Cal approaches a group of small creatures that demonstrate how to wall jump.

The exact same thing happens in Super Metroid and the creatures Cal meets look very similar to Metroid’s Etecoons , who teach Samus how to wall jump when she first encounters them.

This now makes us wonder if the new ostrich mount seen in December’s trailer is meant to be a stand-in for the Dachora , another Super Metroid creature that also resembles an ostrich. (You can seem them wandering around in this new footage, but Cal never actually rides them.)

It wouldn’t be surprising if these similarities were deliberate, since Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s exploration worked a lot like a Metroidvania, as you regularly backtracked through areas to find hidden items and shortcuts.

You can watch the footage for yourself below, which comes via IGN.
