PlayStation Plus Collection is like a pass for games (pic: Sony)
Sony is ending the PS Plus Collection featuring 19 free PS4 games on PS5, but you can still keep them if you’ve already downloaded them.
According to their latest financial results PlayStation 5 has just enjoyed its best three months sales period ever, selling 7.1 million consoles over Christmas for a total of 32 million worldwide. And to celebrate it’s… stopping giving away free PlayStation 4 games to new owners.
The PlayStation Plus Collection was created for the launch of the PlayStation 5 and originally included 20 games, 10 first party and 10 third party, as a way for new owners to catch up with a number of classic PlayStation 4 titles they may not have previously played.
Apart from removing Persona 5 last year, the collection has remained ever since but now Sony has announced that it is being discontinued on May 9 and will not be available to new PlayStation 5 owners after that.
The variety of third party publishers involved is impressive but it’s unclear whether there’s any special significance to which games they’ve provide for the service.
If you currently have access to the collection and have downloaded the games then you will be able to keep them, including future re-downloads, but if there’s any of them you haven’t tried yet you should download them immediately, whether you’re going to play them or not, or otherwise you’ll miss your chance.
PS Plus Collection full list of games Batman: Arkham Knight (WB Games) Battlefield 1 (EA) Bloodborne (Sony) Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 – Zombie’s Chronicles Edition (Activision) Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (Activision) Days Gone (Sony) Detroit: Become Human (Sony) Fallout 4 (Bethesda) Final Fantasy 15 Royal Edition (Square Enix) God Of War (Sony) Infamous Second Son (Sony) Monster Hunter World (Square Enix) Mortal Kombat X (WB Games) Ratchet & Clank (Sony Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Capcom) The Last Guardian (Sony) The Last Of Us Remastered (Sony) Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (Sony) Until Dawn (Sony)
Rather than closing the collection down, back in 2020 Sony teased the possibility that it could be expanded in the future. That never happened though and instead the standard monthly PS Plus updates have continued to be the focus.
Sony offered no explanation for ending the collection, which was only mentioned briefly in a PlayStation Blog post about this month’s new batch of PS Plus games.

It seems unlikely that the collection will ever return but the only good that might come from the announcement is that one of the included games is Bloodborne, which despite being one of the best games on PlayStation 4 has mysteriously never had a PlayStation 5 update.
Whether being removed from the collection will make that more or less likely remains to be seen.
