Ubisoft ’s next Far Cry is claimed to have been split in two: a multiplayer-only spin-off and a more traditional single-player title.

It’s only a few days since Arkane’s Redfall seemed like it might be the only Far Cry style experience in the immediate future and yet already there are believable rumours of Far Cry 7 being in development.

It’s claimed that not one but two Far Cry games are in the works, both of which are aiming for an autumn 2025 release, though these things are always subject to change.

The two games in question are said to be Far Cry 7, internally codenamed Project Blackbird, and a multiplayer spin-off only referred to as Project Maverick.

Supposed details on Far Cry 7 are slim, but Project Maverick has been described as an extraction-based shooter (so something akin to games like Escape From Tarkov) with a permadeath mechanic set in the Alaskan wilderness.

In 2021, there was talk of Far Cry 7 being more of a live service title , but perhaps Ubisoft has shifted course and made that a separate game, while keeping Far Cry 7 as a traditional singe-player title.

According to the report by Insider Gaming , that may be precisely what has happened. Apparently, the two games were one and the same until Dan Hay, the series’ creative director, left Ubisoft in late 2021.

Insider Gaming also claims to have seen in-game screenshots for Project Maverick, but only mentioned that they contain extraction zones and lootable chests.

While there’s no mention of Project Maverick being a live service or free-to-play, it’s certainly plausible considering Ubisoft previously pledged to heavily focus on such products .

However, it’s yet to release a live service game that can be considered a bona fide success, with attempts like Hyper Scape failing to find a consistent audience.

It was even claimed that the company had ‘at least a dozen’ battle royale games in development , but whether any of them are still in the works isn’t known.
