FIFA and Mario Kart are favourite franchises among older gamers says survey

A new survey lists FIFA as UK gamers’ favourite franchise, with most of the top 10 consisting of series over 30 years old.

If it weren’t for its consistently high sales numbers, you’d sometimes think that nobody liked EA’s FIFA series, given how often players have complained about its monetisation and the lack of meaningful changes from sequel to sequel.

Last year, it was revealed that FIFA is the best-selling video game franchise in the UK , surpassing Super Mario and Call Of Duty, and now a new survey suggests that, for all its problems, the series remains the people’s favourite as well.

The survey lists it as the most popular gaming franchise ever, garnering nearly a fifth of the vote from 2,000 adult gamers.

We’re not sure whether this speaks more to FIFA’s audience’s willingness to put up with EA’s shenanigans or that the constant complaints come from a very vocal minority.

Regardless, it once again beats out Super Mario and Call Of Duty, with the former coming in third and the latter in sixth. However, Mario Kart was treated as a separate franchise, thus earning it second place.

The survey was conducted by gambling site Lottoland, which concludes that ‘With so many new games coming out all time – and with brilliant graphics to boot – it’s amazing to see that what we actually all want are the pixelated, cult classics that we grew up on.’

Its evidence comes from how the highest-ranking franchises are mostly over 30 years old, with the likes of Pac-Man and Tetris coming in fifth and seventh place, respectively.

Although we’d hardly call either of those cult classics, considering they remain iconic franchises and continue to receive new entries to day.

The fact that Tetris and even Space Invaders (which took tenth place) are ranked so high also makes it obvious that those surveyed were of a much older generation.

What Mega Man is doing in there too is a mystery, considering the games have only ever been big in the US and Japan, much to Capcom’s frustration.

The results would likely be quite different if younger gamers were included in the survey. Fortnite, which only took 28th place, would certainly be higher up. Although Minecraft still managed to take 12th, perhaps because adults were playing it with their kids.
