Super Mario Odyssey email promotion raises hope of new paid-for DLC

Super Mario Odyssey email promotion raises hope of new paid-for DLC
Super Mario Odyssey – is Nintendo subtly teasing something or are fans getting worked up over nothing? (pic: Nintendo)

After Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got DLC over five years after launch, fans suspect Super Mario Odyssey will see a similar treatment.

It’s nearly been six years since the release of Super Mario Odyssey and, while there certainly will be a new 3D Mario title in the future, Nintendo hasn’t so much as hinted at a sequel or follow-up.

At the moment, Nintendo’s more preoccupied with launching The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, which is so far its biggest and most anticipated title of 2023.

However, there are suspicions of Nintendo having something related to Super Mario Odyssey in the pipeline, since the company has been sending out emails encouraging fans to play through the game again.

‘What were your favourite voyages in Super Mario Odyssey?’ the email reads, running down all the game’s content, such as its 17 explorable kingdoms and whopping 800+ collectable power moons.

The part that’s caught fans’ eyes, though, is this sentence: ‘There may be even more out there still to be discovered… Perhaps it’s worth hopping aboard The Odyssey once more and taking the trip all over again.’

Uh… Nintendo is emailing me and others about Mario Odyssey in 2023. They REALLY want us to play the game again… I wonder why? ;) pic.twitter.com/SV683J8CaV — Nintendo Prime (@NintyPrime) January 17, 2023

Did anyone else get an email from Nintendo about Super Mario Odyssey? And how there’s apparently more out there to discover? What could this even mean? pic.twitter.com/2kEpFJWoVO — Mirage✨🎼 (@StarryMirage) January 16, 2023

Apparently Nintendo it’s sending emails about Super Mario Odyssey. Very peculiar move for a game that is more than 5 years old. 🤔 — markomaro (@Newmarkomaro) January 16, 2023

Super Mario Odyssey is a big game, so it’s not unreasonable to think there may be a secret or two that players haven’t found yet. However, it is a bit strange that, instead of promoting one of its newer releases, Nintendo wants people to go back to a five-year old game.

Assuming there is more to this than meets the eye, this could suggest that Nintendo has new DLC planned. The game did see minor updates that added the Luigi’s Balloon World mini-game and Nintendo Labo support, but nothing that was paid-for.

It certainly wouldn’t be out of character for Nintendo to add DLC this long after a game’s launch. At the peak of the Mario Kart 9 rumours last year, the company instead announced 48 DLC racetracks for 2017’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe .

Others have pointed out that, in 2021, Nintendo sent out a survey gauging fan interest in the WarioWare series, which was followed by the announcement of WarioWare: Get It Together at E3. So this could be a similar situation.

Plus, with the Super Mario Bros. movie releasing in April, it would make perfect sense for Nintendo to release some new Mario game content (if not a new game entirely) for cross promotional purposes.

It’s also possible that Nintendo planned to add Super Mario Odyssey DLC much sooner, but plans were changed or delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After all, Fire Emblem Engage feels like it was supposed to have released for the series’ 30th anniversary in 2020, given it prominently features characters from multiple previous games. Yet it launches this week after only being announced last September.

A prominent Nintendo insider even claimed this to be the case ahead of its announcement, adding that development had long since wrapped up and Nintendo simply kept it on the backburner.

Perhaps the same fate has met the rumoured anniversary title for Donkey Kong . It was said that such a project was in the works to celebrate that franchise’s 40th anniversary and yet the occasion came and went without so much as an acknowledgment from Nintendo.

If Super Mario Odyssey DLC is on the way, Nintendo could announce it at its next Nintendo Direct. One hasn’t been announced yet but, given the company’s track record, the first one of the year will likely air this month or next.
