Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League – what is really going on? (pic: Warner Bros.)



A leak showing Suicide Squad has multiple currencies and a season pass, and a plot too edgy for even Zack Snyder, have both appeared online.



Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has been in development for at least seven years and it’s out in May, and yet in all that time we’ve barely seen more than 30 seconds of gameplay and there’s still no real explanation of what it actually is.



The only official details are that it’s a third person action game with a strong emphasis on four-player co-op, set in the Batman: Arkham universe following an invasion by Superman villain Brainiac, who seems to have taken over the minds of the Justice League.



There’s no more detail than that but the big question is whether it’s a live service title or not, with multiple rumours suggesting that it was originally riddled with microtransactions and the reason for its delay is that all those have now been taken out… or have they?



Supposedly, the failure of Marvel’s Avengers, and other similar games, convinced Warner Bros. to have a rethink about Suicide Squad (there are also suggestions that something similar happened with Gotham Knights ) but there’s never been any actual proof of that.



The tweet below appeared online today and seems to be from some sort of beta, with the leaker scrubbing out onscreen information that could identify them.



On the face of it, it doesn’t seem very interesting but look closer and you can see the main menu includes the headings Looks (presumably cosmetics), Social, Battle Pass, and Store, all of which sound very much like game as a service style features you’d find in something like Destiny 2.









There’s also what appears to be multiple different in-game currencies displayed just below the main menu. In other similar titles at least one of these would involve special currency you have to buy with real money.



Although it would be difficult, it’s not impossible that the leak is a fake, or that it comes from a much older build, but with no official information from Warner Bros. it’s impossible to tell exactly what’s going on.

The image arrived only a few days after a supposed leak of the entire plot of the game, which made the familiar claim that originally it had been a games as a service title but that it was delayed to remove those elements – including the entirety of the post-game content.



That seems to contradict the leaked screenshot but since it’s possible that either or both are fakes who knows what’s really going on (well, except Warner Bros.).



The leaked plot is described in a suspicious amount of detail on Reddit , although apparently the original source is 4chan. That doesn’t entirely rule it out from being true, as some accurate leaks have come from there, but it’s certainly a red flag.



We’re not going to repeat all the plot details here but if you want the short version you can keep reading for a brief description.



The non-spoiler version is that it’s the sort of edgelord nonsense that makes Zack Snyder and Injustice seem tame in comparison. And yet at the same time it’s still not entirely impossible to believe it might be true…

We’re not going to go into detail as we think, on balance, it’s probably not true but the gist is that most of the Justice League, and indeed most of the DC characters on Earth, end up dying at some point or other, either by your hand or that of Brainiac and his drones.



Apparently Wonder Woman is the only one to avoid being taken over and she suggests using The Flash, who gets killed at one point but resurrected by a Lazarus pit, to turn back time in a Flashpoint event – the plot convenience used in the comic books to reset the entire DC Universe.



That’s a weird way to end the Batman: Arkham universe but it makes some kind of sense if you assume developer Rocksteady probably don’t want to go back to making standalone Batman games and that the already announced Wonder Woman game could be the start of a new universe.



Or rather it may be the start of the games linking to the new DC cinematic universe, as new franchise overlord James Gunn has implied that, like Star Wars but unlike Marvel, all games and movies will be linked in the future.
