Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Call Of Duty has rarely ever not been the best-selling game of the year (pic: Activision)



This year’s Call Of Duty has overtaken Elden Ring as the biggest seller of the year in the US.



Back in March, Elden Ring became the best-selling game of the year in the US despite launching just the month before.



An impressive feat to say the least, and it looked like it would maintain that success for the rest of 2022 . Chart trackers the NPD even predicted it would outsell this year’s Call Of Duty title, the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reboot.



As is though, and despite its whirlwind popularity, Elden Ring has been knocked off its perch and Modern Warfare 2 has taken the top spot as the US’s best-selling game of 2022.



Exact sales figures haven’t been shared, so only Activision knows precisely how much it’s sold. However, it’s most certainly a lot considering Elden Ring entered the top 10 best-selling games of all time in the US .



This must mean Modern Warfare 2 now sits in that top 10 too, although who knows precisely where. The identities of the other top-selling games are unknown, but it’s safe to assume that at least a few other Call Of Duty games are amongst them. Probably a few GTAs too.



Bandai Namco never shared exact US sales figures for Elden Ring either but, as of September, Elden Ring has sold 17.5 million copies worldwide. The lack of worldwide sales for Modern Warfare 2 means we can’t make an exact comparison.



However, Modern Warfare 2 became the fastest selling entry in the series just three days after its launch, with estimated launch sales of at least 8 million copies.

While Elden Ring has been a phenomenal success, it clearly doesn’t have the same reach as Call Of Duty. Activision’s series has very rarely not been the top selling game of the year, usually only losing out whenever Grand Theft Auto studio Rockstar Games releases something.



Plus, although Elden Ring has had nearly the entire year to drum up sales, Modern Warfare 2 has been able to take advantage of the Christmas period.

At least Elden Ring fans can brag about the game’s awards though. It was named Game Of The Year at both the Golden Joystick and The Game Awards . Modern Warfare 2 had three nominations at the latter, but didn’t win any of them.

NPD also reports that, after being October’s best seller, Modern Warfare 2 held its position for November as well in terms of dollar sales.



This means it outperformed all of November’s key releases – God Of War: Ragnarök , Sonic Frontiers , and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet .
