Like many others, Twitch streamer Asmongold isn’t happy with Nintendo shutting down the Smash World Tour just days before the finals.

The unofficial Super Smash Bros. competitive series, Smash World Tour, was set to conclude on December 9 in Texas, but things won’t be going forward as planned.

The organisers of the event have had to cancel both the finals and the upcoming 2023 circuit, after receiving notice from Nintendo that they could no longer operate.

While reacting to the news during a recent stream, Asmongold criticised the company for its decision and took aim at Panda Global’s CEO Alan Bunney for his alleged involvement.

The Smash World Tour organisers heavily implied that Panda Global – which is Nintendo’s chosen partner for the first official Super Smash Bros tournament, called Panda Cup – had a hand in the closure.

While watching YouTuber Ludwig’s deep dive into the Smash World Tour and Nintendo drama, Asmongold shared his thoughts on the situation.

‘There’s a certain amount of agency that you lose. If you want something to be out in public, in the public space, and make money, I think you have to give up a little bit of agency,’ Asmongold said, showing his disagreement with Nintendo’s new approach.

The streamer also went on to criticise Panda Global’s CEO Alan Bunney stating that he’s ‘undeniably at fault,’ as Smash World Tour’s organisers also accused him of sabotaging their relationship with other tournament partners.

The reason that Nintendo gave for the cancellation of the Smash World Tour was that it doesn’t have an official licence – which is not a set requirement for many tournaments.

Moreover, the organisers claim that getting officially licensed by Nintendo had been in the talks since before the 2022 Tour was announced and kicked off in March, according to a lengthy statement .

Another company that works with the Smash World Tour, VGBootCamp, has also cancelled two upcoming in-person events, stating that the future of running major Smash tournaments is ‘uncertain.’

When it comes to Super Smash Bros. esports, Nintendo has always been reluctant to directly promote the scene, shutting down countless other events over the years.

In a bid to address the situation, a Nintendo spokesperson simply stated that the company ‘couldn’t come to an agreement’ with the organisers for ‘a full circuit in 2023.’

Replying to Nintendo’s statement, Smash World Tour said that organisers had asked multiple times if they would be able to continue to operate without a licence until they were told point blank that those ‘times are over.’
